My new rifle won't fire....

I need some help from the experts on this board.

I took out my new rifle (6mm Dasher) for the first time to the range.

It fired a couple of times when I closed the bolt, and after a total of about 5 rounds I was unable to pull the trigger to release the firing pin.

Specifics:
Brand new BAT B action.
Brand new Jewell HVR trigger.
Krieger 29” HV barrel.

I delivered the action, trigger and barrel to a respected gunsmith who has chambered several other rifles for me, and I when I received it back I had a local gunsmith bed it in a McMillan F class stock.

So after a completely frustrating/disappointing day at the range, I brought the rifle home and tried to carefully inspect it. I removed the Jewell trigger and replaced it with another brand new Jewell trigger, which did not help (cycling the bolt cocks the firing pin but then pulling on the trigger and nothing happens).

I took apart the Jewell trigger and inspected it and cleaned it (lighter fluid) but this did not help either.

About every 20 times when cycling the bolt, the trigger will release, but this seems random.

Either I have a problem with the trigger, the bolt or the actiion, or I'm doing something stupid.

I am hoping that someone can offer some useful advice before I ship it off to a gunsmith.

silly question but this happened to me one time.

Does the trigger have enough clearance with the trigger guard

If the Bat B's come with a trigger hanger, check and see where you have it set at with the 0/10/20/30 towards the muzzle end of the rifle. You might need to adjust this.

Also, when installing the Jewell trigger the sideplates can bind and become crooked when installing onto the trigger hanger. See if you can straighten out the sideplates a bit and see if that helps. I used a flat head screwdriver and tried to make the gap equal on both sides.

I think one of these will fix your problem.

I'm really not sure what did it, but I took the trigger apart again and cleaned it again with lighter fluid.

Made sure nothing was binding (nothing was obvious) and made sure that the trigger guard was oriented properly.

It is dry firing fine now without issues..... will take it to the range again tomorrow.

Is the firing pin in cocked position when cycling the the bolt? Check to see if the firing pin actually moves, just had a custom action of another brand where it was the firing pin not moving forward. It was the firing pin not moving because of a grease build up inside the bolt.
Try taking the firing pin out of the bolt and clean that, prior to going to the range again.

did you pop a primer ??? the lil' disc may be inside the bolt and causing the problem,,..Roger

With a previous rifle with a BAT action and Jewell trigger I had to get it proofed (here in the UK).
The proofhouse made up a proof round and on the second round fired it popped the primer and a very small piece of the primer entered the firing pin and stopped the action from cycling and the trigger obviously wouldn't work. Take out the firing pin from the bolt and blow a high pressure hose down it and you might sort it out.

The firing pin is cocked appropriately and moves when I cycle the bolt... it just would not fall.

When it would not fire, there was no primer strike. The firing pin did not fall.

I removed the firing pin from the bolt (with my BAT firing pin removal tool) and inspected everything.... it looked like what you would expect a new bolt/firing pin to look like. No excess dirt or grease. Cleaned it anyway.

Heading back to the range this morning; hopefully with better results.

Mine is just a pure guess based upon what once happened to me with a new custom stock and NOT with a BAT action .....torqued action screws pinched the trigger due to a tight trigger channel. Slightly re-dremeled the trigger channel in the stock and problem disappeared. Just a thought.

Just got back from the range.... and had a good day.
Shot 28 rounds without difficulty- no trigger issues.
Every round fired flawlessly.

True, but now I know how to take apart and clean my Jewell triggers.
