Jewell/Remington 700 problem

I got a new rifle (used) with a trued Remington 700 short action. it has a standard Timney trigger installed that works fine. however, i wanted to go with a minimum pull weight trigger, so i ordered a brand new Bench Rest Jewell trigger with bolt release from GreatScott Shooters .

I installed the trigger today with no problems. however, when the bolt is closed, it will not cock. i spoke with a guy at Jewell who had me re install the trigger and play a bit with the sear engagement and pull weight. i re installed it twice, including one time installing it without the bolt release mechanism. nothing helped. his answer was to send it back to them in Texas and they would check it out.

not real happy at this point for a drop in replacement part. anyone here have some insight on this problem before i send it back to Jewell?

If there is pressure on the trigger side plates (maybe from a tight pin or insufficient space in the inletting) the top lever can be trapped in the fired position, failing to catch the striker when you close the bolt.

Does the trigger work when it's not in the action? I.e., when you press on the top lever does the top lever drop into the fired position when you pull the trigger? If so, you can try a couple of things:

1. Lightly tap the trigger pins in the opposite direction from which they were driven.
2. See if the trigger works with the barreled action out of the stock. If so, you have an inletting/clearance problem, which usually can be fixed with a little Dremel work.

Will it lock without the action in the stock. Had this happen with a Timney I installed on a friends rifle when it was installed in the stock. The trigger and stock were interfering with each other. Once I removed a little stock it worked just fine.

will check on a couple of your all's suggestions. the problem is occurring WITHOUT the barreled action installed in the stock

no, it does not work when not installed in the stock

I may have left out a couple of details in my first post that could help diagnose the trigger issue.

after looking at the diagrahm of the trigger and reading some of the posts here the issue is i believe is that the trigger is cocked but pulling it is not releasing the sear.

there has been one exception to this. when the trigger is first installed in the action and the bolt inserted for the first time, the trigger fires. however after this initial firing of the trigger, subsequent cycling of the bolt has no effect and the trigger does not function. again, this is all without the barreled action installed in the stock, so the stock is not the issue at this point

That tells you your pinching the top lever between the side plates like the first reply said. From the top, carefully tap each side plate outward with a small punch. A light tap each. This is caused by pins that are fitting too tight. Everything has tolerances.

Alex thanks. I have also been advised to crocus paper the trigger pins to the point that they can be inserted by hand, which i am unable to do at this point

so you are referring to the side plates of the trigger housing itself?

thanks to all for the inputs.

as i stated in my original post, Jewell provided little info to make it work. I sent an e mail to to GreatScott Shooters, the dealer I purchased it from, about the issue. i quickly got a couple of e mails and then a phone call from Larry, the owner I believe.

Larry was very helpful with taking the time to explain what the issue(s) might be and their solutions. the primary thing was to tell me that the pins holding the trigger to the action should have a somewhat "loose" fit, requiring little more than hand pressure or light tapping to install. he explained how to turn down the pins slightly in my drill press. he also suggested to make sure the bolt was clean and not filled in with gunk.

i accomplished all his suggestions, flushed it with lighter fluid, refitted the trigger and it is now working perfectly.

Big Kudos goes to Larry and GreatScott Shooters.com. Him taking the time to help me resolve these issues is most appreciated. I absolutely will do business with GreatScottShooters.com in the future.

as they say, service after the sale

Bottom line is the side plates and components contacting the side plates have tolerance problems. I have returned two triggers to Jewell with this problem and they came back perfect. Jewell will make it good!!

I have had 2 personal issues w a Jewell. One was due to an
improper trigger hanger, and the second was from a remington bolt whose internals was full of heavy grease, and wouldnt let
the trigger function properly.
Nothing is 100% perfect all the time. If its man made, it can malfunction. LDS

My jewel was working flawless out of the box and I got it to 6oz with a small twist of the screw... that being said they use a third party machine shop to get parts and then assemble the triggers on site ........ now the me nor a friend of mine has had problems however
