My new Rem 700 5R - bolt

Guess I'm having trouble seeing what the major issue is. If there is a high spot, a 1/4" round hard Arkansas stone will take it down. Certainly not a pretty bolt face, but anytime you magnify something many times with a very clear picture you see all kinds of things that aren't an issue.

Here is what it will look like after Greg bushes it.

He isn't raising a issue with the bolt "face", but rather the extractor

Good luck... I would fix it myself or pay someone to do it....
nah, it's not the extractor, the rim of the bolt face, its torn, has a small gash.
Maybe not a big deal, but this is a brand new rifle. QC is at the mercy of profit.

Tikka or Sako for me...

I bought one of those. Same gun from an "on line retailer" came to me covered in dust like it had been on a shelf for years. I did a quick clean and started shooting it. During the second cleaning, I noticed scratches and wear on the bolt face. I shined a light into the action and there it was: a "dent" with a big burr on the face of the barrel next to the camber. It looked like somebody put a screwdriver against it and whacked it hard with a hammer. I had to pull the barrel to file off the burr.:mad::mad: The good news is that after a few hundred test loads, the gun shoots nice little groups for a factory gun. The outer ring of the boltface has some damage from the burr but it's just cosmetic. I couldn't send it back to where I bought it because I waited 6months to shoot it. That was my lesson. Now when I get a gun, I go over it with a fine toothed comb as soon as I get it.;)

Good info. I had the same rifle years back, it shot very well. sold it. mistake. Lesson learned also.
Makes me appreciate the dozen or more US manufacturers who produce a rem 700 "clone" (or a better design) with much higher quality.
Stiller, Defiance, Altas, BAT, Nesika, Surgeon, GAP, Seekins + many more. My father said " you pays your money & you takes your chances."

Jim, tough way to lose a rifle. dam.
I guess little things get to me but hate to see Rem letting stuff like this out the door.

Take er easy.

I spoke with Remington about the defective bolt. Rep said Rem would send me a delivery label, and my unfired rifle would go to the repair facility. 4-5 weeks to "repair." An apology or some sort of acknowledgement as an unfired Rem product, or a quick replacement -- was not happening. Rep was very knowledgable, professional, courteous and glad to help/repair. But a month at least to replace this bolt + need to send in entire rifle. fwiw.

yeah, brass --maybe a case ruptured in it...? the ejector took a hit too. Rifle has zero wear marks on any part.
I'm not sending it back. No way. Compared to many, I'm blessed just to have the chance to shoot a new gun.
done.

The last Remington action I purchased had the mount holes but no threads. Not only were there no threads but the holes were oversized as well. Ended up re-drilling and tapping for an 8-32 screw and having to modify my bases to fit. Worked out fine but took a lot more time and effort on my part. Then a couple days later I had a guy bring a brand new in the box Remington over that he couldn't get the front fill screw out of the mount hole. When I finally got it broke free it was full of some sort of epoxy and didn't have any threads either. It's a shame Remington has fallen so much.

I would be on the phone bitchin about that. I have owned quite a few over the years and never ever saw one that bad or really bad at all. My son in law got a 700 VS in .308 and new brass was stretched so bad it would break on reloading so we sent it back with the bad brass and new brass to show the difference . They called in a couple weeks and couldn't find anything wrong so I called them back and got an engineer and told him my field gage would drop right in with no drag so he ended up with a new rifle out of the deal,no charge for upgrading to stainless in 22-250 to boot.

The Rem rep said Rem would "repair" it, no problem, no charge, but I'd have to send it w a wait time or 4-5 weeks.
(probably would re-bolt w same headspace, my guess should take like 2 min...).

I'm going to shoot it & then see. Pain for your son in law but sounds like a relatively good resolution there.
I opened a repair ticket & sent pix etc. Rep had zero interest in speeding up the exchange for a new rifle.
