The story is kinda fun, I thought I would jot it down...

Two years ago, I won free tuition to Darrel Holland's long range shooting school in Oregon (which I highly recommend). Never being a target or competitive shooter previously (an avid hunter), I learned a ton and enjoyed myself immensely, so much so that I wanted to continue to shoot at longer ranges.

I found that my local club (the Elk River Sportsman’s club) had a 600 yard range and an F-class league that shot once a week. This sounded perfect to me so I joined the club, bought a Savage f-class rifle in 6.5x284, and started shooting. My first scores were in the high 180s. With a lot of help and a lot of mistakes, I was able to learn a ton in the last year and a half to average in the mid 190s.

Early last summer I pretty quickly decided that I wanted to build a full on custom, ordered the BAT action, barrel, and stock, and waited for things to arrive. Finally in February, everything had showed up and I delivered all the parts to Stan Ware for the metal work and bedding. Stan had done 3 (hunting) rifles for me previously and always impressed me with his knowledge, attention to detail, and precision. On top of this Stan is one helluva guy. A finer gentleman you would be hard to find.

In the middle of June, I picked the rifle up and brought it to Tony Larson to finish the stock. Tony is also a fine gentleman who builds benchrest stocks and was a high level benchrest competitor for the past 50 years. I don’t know exactly what he uses, but it’s a two part chemical resistant epoxy that he puts on with 7 coats and polishes. A beautiful smooth finish.

Last week, I finally had my rifle done, and spent the next few days turning brass (to fit the tight neck and form a false shoulder), fireforming 100+ pieces of brass (lost 4) and breaking the rifle in. Even during fireforming at 100 yards, with dropped charges, this rifle was shooting amazingly small bug hole groups.

Yesterday morning I went to the range early to escape the heat (it was already 90 degrees and windy at 9am) and shot two 300 yd ladders from 31gr to 34gr of Varget (jumping .020). Both ladders pointed to 33.3gr, as being on the top of a tight vertical window and showing no pressure signs (33.6 and 34.0 were mildly compressed loads).

After making up 60 rds for the evening’s match and cleaning my barrel, I returned to the club later that afternoon to foul the barrel and run some through the chronograph. I was getting about 3020fps with a very good ES and SD.

The evening’s 600 yd match (2 x 20rds for score, 3 relays) was incredibly hot (98+ degrees, high humidity), and started very windy. I was on third relay and shot last. Thankfully, by the time I shot, shade had enveloped the firing line and the wind had laid down quite a bit.

Having never shot this rifle further than 300, I made a safety side elevation guess. My first two sighters were an 8-9. Somebody even cross-fired on my target before I got started. Uh-oh.

Luckily I adjusted and started hitting X’s. I ended up scoring a 200-19x, followed by a 200-11x. I am told that the former score is a club record. To say I am pleased (and more than a little bit astonished) is a huge understatement. I've still got a lot to learn, but this rifle sure does make things easier.

I’d like to publicly thank all those folks who helped along the way: Stan, Tony, Ray, Matt, Scott, Mike, Adam, Leo, Darrel, Ernie, the general 6mmbr.com forum (you guys are great), and the control tower (my wife).

ps - I know the card says 300, but it was 600yds. I blame Scott (effendude).

Sharp rifle and equipment, thanks for the story and report. It would be a great idea to treat the control tower (wife) to a romantic dinner in case you need anything else real soon. ;) WD

Nosualc.

Great story! Gotta love it when we hear a coming out story like yours!!

Beautiful rig and great shooting, thanks for sharing..

It is a pleasure to be part of this success story. I will take the blame for the score sheet being labeled 300 Yards. Heck, if we would have known Jon was going to shoot so well, we would have made more score sheets with the correct labels! ;D We printed a 1000 score sheets for 600 yards and a few hundred for 300 each year. We have ran out of 600 yard sheets for the season, so we are using up the left over 300 yard sheets. Participation in the league is not a problem.

Great shooting Jon! And could you add some clutter to your counter? You make most of us look bad!

Jon

Great story and what a blast it was to watch!! And to think you did it all without a shooting glove, amazing!! Seriously though great shooting and isn't it fun to see all the parts come together and time spent learning everybodys different take on reloading and different techniques then forming your own methods and seeing them pay off! I think you'll be seeing a high-master card in your wallet real soon.

Congratulations on a great score and and a great rifle!

Adam

Nice Story. Send me a couple closeup shots of the rifle (and maybe one with the driver) and I'll try to put this in the bulletin. I like it when everything comes together like this. AND I know Stan Ware is a great smith, very precise with xlnt attention to detail.

DBailey, this was not an NRA "registered" match, rather an NRA "approved" match. I gather that the difference is in the formality of the match setup (the former being more so). My scores count for classification but cannot be record holders. Our State Championship is coming up in two weeks (at our club), and will be a "registered" match. We'll see if I can keep my poop in a group through that. If I can only "not change a thing"... LOL.

I would be remiss to not mention that Adam (fpskills) shot a 200-18x the previous week, which of course ties the national record. I expect my claim to the club record may not stand long. There are a some excellent, excellent shooters in our league.

Paul, I'll try to get some better shots to you in the next day or so.

Jon,

Again, Congrats!! Your right, the ERSC has some great shooters this yr! Your league as a whole has its "poop in a group" and is setting the benchmark at least regionally, for the rest of "us" to aspire to reach... Keep it up!! ;)

Jon,
How Impressive!
I remember the four days we spent together at Holland's. Great times for sure!
Congratulations.
Very happy for you.
Can't wait to see you get used to that set-up.
I guess acclimated pretty quickly to using the NEO ;D

It's quite an accomplishment either way!

Good luck to you and your buddies in the State Championship.

Jon,
Let me know when you want to take photos. I have a fresh hair cut and have lost a little weight. I would look good posing with your rifle. ;D

JON ROCKS!!!! (ADAM rocked it last week :P)

Jon it was stressful shooting on the line while listening to everyone rush down to watch you "run um". I couldn't keep my composure and with all the activity going on, and I will never know if I was destined for a 200. So you "owe" me two points somewhere I think. Kidding I'm sure I woulda cracked under pressure!

The suspense on Monday nights to see who will shoot an amazing score is exciting. Only 5 more days till we all get to try it again.

It is an honor to shoot with this passionate group of shooters and I'm looking forward to the state match at ERSC!!!!

Jon -- free up a spot in your wallet in the front for that new HM card!

GO TEAM TURRET TWISTERS!!!!!
------------> LISA <-------------

p.s. it's nice of Lori to let you have all this fun!! She's amazing.
p.s.s. Adam----I honestly can't remember if it was 16 or 17x. We can check on Monday.

Lisa

Kidding on the x count.. I wasn't shooting in the match anyway but whatever you do don't let Scott wear sandals in Jon's picture!!

Adam

I,too, moved to a 6BRX this last spring.
I built a 243 WIN bench rest gun over the last 3 years and finely shot out the barrel. Bought a 6BRX reamer and new barrel and had Stu Harvey chamber it.
Got a quicky load developed by the 600yd/1000yd nationals at Sacramento and finished a bit higher than last year.
Spent some time developing a load in earnest and last month got 4 ribbons! A first and three seconds.
Still using my Savage precision target action and home bedded SSS dog tracker stock.

Adam, Mike, Jon:
Debating.....should I refresh the pink toenails before the state match or maybe a fresh coat of RED?? Not sure what our team colors are yet :o

Just gotta catch him during a nap. Maybe a few mojitos will help.
Lisa

Scott- As this thread has hit rock bottom...off topic, my vote from Team Lefse is neon green with little smiley faces. Us barbarians from up north would appreciate your festive colors! Back on topic, I'm still amazed at Jon's score last Monday, he was like a machine, very methodical. It would be like me grabbing the clubs and going out and shooting a 15 under...ain't going to happen!!! Sure happy for Jon, but the pressure is on him next time he shoots, Ye-Ha!! EJ in DL
