My first trued Action

I trued my first Remington action on the lathe. I feel that I did a good job. Was so happy I did crash the lathe-tool-or the Action.Plus I was shooting for 1.075 and came out with a 1.076

My guess Gene would be to chase a stub, shaving it till it fit then check w wires.

I used a full profile insert for my internal and external threading. Practicing threading on some old rifle barrels help me track it down to a close number. Measuring the crest of the internal threads are 1.021-1.022 with dial caliper. Also I made a thread gauge. Some guys seams to just clean up threads and then thread there barrel to match. I like to know where Im at with my threads. So I like to go with a target number. like 1.075 0r 1.080. I think that will clean up an most actions all the way around. 16 threads per inch= 1/16=.0625--.0625x.866=.054 Single depth threading ring compound. I found this and it work great for me. Gene I know you have done this way more than I have. just letting you know what I have done. Also thanks for your help. The full profile also help me so I don't have to use my thread mic or wires to measure a thread when cutting.I have .006 to .010 of wiggle on the action screwed 3/4 of the way onto the barrel. Thats with the indicator on the top of the back bridge of the action.

Measuring the pitch diameter is where it's at. The major and minor is just clearance dimensions. Regardless, if it fits nice, it's all good. Looks good...

A full profile insert should be designed to cut the correct PD when the OD is at the correct dimension, but in practice, I always see at least a few tenths difference, but well within spec; remember that a class 3 1.0625x16 thread has about 5 thou between min and max.

I have checked threads with a thread mic and it seams that this pull profile insert has the thread pitch on the smallest end of the 5 thou.

I would measure the pitch on the barrel that came out of it.
if it fits right i would make a thread gaige/stub with the desired target pitch then thread action to fit.

Considering that he has removed material from the action, there is a better than even chance that whatever came out of it won't fit so pretty good.
Of course it wont hurt anything to check w the old bbl . . . I don't have my Machinery Handbook handy to check a Class 2 tolerance but for 16 tpi I'm guessing abt .006". Its been a while so I could be off.
By the time the action is set up to, say, .0005, then allow for, oh, say .003 mfrg tol, then if really on your game, a .0005 kiss when you pick up - a good chance the pd will be at the far end of what you want for 75% engagement.

I think you misunderstand me
Measuring what came out of it is for finding what the action is before cutting anything then determine the pitch diameter you want (figeuring .010 larger or what you think you need )and make you're stub to that then cut the action threads.
