Some people are more susceptible to that.Though more complicated there are things you can do to a baffled brake that decreases the affect of the pressure wave moving to the rear. I worked with Accuracy International and their partner at the time to design one. It worked well.
A word of warning.
TBI's are real in our world. I shot next to a gentleman with a rear facing baffled brake. Even after putting up a plywood barrier to deflect the blast, it did nothing for the pressure wave. It took several days for the brain fog to dissipate.
All the high pressure events add up after time.
I’m more than happy to give up some brake effectiveness for comfort at this point.
I need to do a back to back with my old 338 brake (419 sidewinder) compared to my buddies brake.
The three reasons I switched are buddy made, no upward bias and hopefully less ground blast to kick up dust.
It’s definitely better at ground blast and concussion at the shooter is less.
