Moving On From Savage Bashing...What's So Great About Remington?

As for goggle, they are repeating stories that some one "said" the gun went off as the safety was switched to fire.

It happened to me. I call it a pre-mature discharge instead of an accidental discharge. In my case, as I shouldered my M700 to shoot at a deer, I pushed the safety forward and the gun fired into the sky. BUT, I also realized that my finger was on the trigger and as I applied the force to push the safety forward, I rotated my hand such that I put pressure on the trigger when the safety went to Fire.

I've often wondered how many of the reported Remington ADs occured just like mine did. Operator error.

I suppose that could happen, but having had many Remington's,
it never happened to me.

I just cant believe Remington would use a defective trigger for decades.

I have 6 and when I read that I replaced them all. None of mine failed also. Never one time did Remington ever post anything about it. Larry

We all knew the trigger bs would get posted here. So to clarify....the only thing unsafe is when an uneducated fool modifies a trigger (any trigger of any firearm), lowering the necessary trigger pull so low that the mere movement of a thousandth of an inch can and will discharge the firearm. Now that's stupid! AND I've witnessed these idiots that have their finger on the trigger while disengaging the safety. HINT to all.....use your trigger finger to index your rifle just as one should do when properly trained with a handgun! It's really not difficult to stay safe!!!

I think winter is getting bad and people are getting cabin fever and becoming negative on just about everything, Remingtons, Savages, MSNBC, Customs. I just started reading this Main Message section, I been missing put on some decent drama.

Well, when I wrote, "...In all seriousness, I really would like to know the pros and cons of the Remington 700 design and performance...", I really wanted to know. Apart from some initial useful info, including photos, the content has descended into something less useful. It does not help to try to tear down one action to elevate another. I had hoped to learn more about the supposed quicker lock time on the trigger, the sometimes questioned extractor design, why is it as gritty as some say, what's up with a bolt handle that sometimes breaks, what makes the action strong (or not), what things are the worst part of it, either in design or manufacturing quality, or the things that are done quite well, etc. It seems this initial request has been quickly lost and is of little interest. That's fine, just wishing I could learn more from those who have considerable experience with the Remington.

Larry: How many of those "unsafe" Remington triggers were tampered with by someone who had no idea what they were doing? Just asking.
I was guilty of that about 40 years ago. You cant "hone" trigger parts on the Kitchen table, had to replace the sear.
As for the unsafe triggers, that's propaganda, just think about it.
If you do not point a loaded gun at some one or your self no one gets hurt
John H.

True, much easier when you can unload with the safety on but ya what are you doing pointing the gun at some one!
They went off when you took the safety off. Pull it upon goggle. Larry

the Savage triggers easily do the same thing. They couldn't figure out a better trigger, so they just added a secondary safety with the trigger blade. I couldn't even tell you how many times I've seen a Savage trigger release a sear when the safety was disengaged. So don't even try to start that battle. Any of you long time Savage owners know EXACTLY what I'm talking about.

They never try to fix anything just put a patch on it. But I not seen it happen if someone had screw with trigger. Larry

that's usually the cause. But the Savage safety set screw tolerance has to be set so perfectly that I have seen it fail in very cold temps when the metal contracts.

You can try to set the screw in very cold temps to avoid this issue, but then the safety can't engage at all once it warms up and the metal expands. Just a horribly unreliable design that is not very safe, pun intended.

I have found most of the time it is the metal tang on the trigger near the safety isn't holding the trigger tight. I never had one discharge but the will de cock Larry

I equate the remington 700 to the chevy 350, It is usually pretty decent in it's own right. Everyone works on it and makes parts for it and if you want exceptional performance from it your gonna need em, but you can do it. Has not evolved beyond "old reliable" so it is not getting better but not getting worse. Still like the ford 351C better, think it is better even if parts are fewer and farther between.

Custom actions are next level: if you rework everything in the action, change the trigger, stock and barrel is it really still a remington? I would say no, not really.
Stroke a 350 out and drop after-market heads, crank, pistons and everything else on it: is it still a chevy 350? No, not really.

Got to admit, savage's evolutions have made them better except for the trigger guard safety and smooth nut.
I never thought modularity would be desirable in a bolt gun until I started playing with savage. Now I can't justify living without it.
All those extra pieces....... Those wonderful little swappable pieces!
Bolt handles, bolt faces and barrels changed in minutes and back again if I want to. Still got a dusty 700 and it still works good enough but loving some savages.

[/quote] Thanks Now lets all do Some checking and find if Remington is just doing some C Y A I know I replaced all mine on my hunting guns. Larry

Of course it's CYA, you would do the same if PMSNBC misrepresented the facts on your products. Virtually ALL firearms and ammo companies have had lawsuits filed against them (even Savage Arms ???). Lawyers go where the big money is....Hence Remington was the target.......and we ALL are paying for it....no matter which brand you buy. :(

How about this!!

Tell me one company that copy's the savage action or for that matter any other action. None i know!!

If you get it right to start with you don't have to spend years trying to improve it!!!

Enough said!! Rem 700 is the BEST!!!
