most forgiving powder for 223

I want to reload mixed head stamp brass (slight volume difference ) on a progressive loader, powder dump variance + or - 3/10 a grain, with these conditions which powder will give me the most accurate loads. (40 grain vmaxs) Thanks Jon

jtate: For me, H335 is the powder of choice, dropped from a drum type measure, although not from the powder measure of a progressive loader (Dillon?)/ never used one for rifle loading/ 45 ACP only. It is also one of the cleanest burning of the ball powders, so remains my first choice for AR-15 ammo.

H335 or R15. Powders that flow well will be the ticket to having a more consistent throw in this case I'd imagine.

Benchmark, it flows extremely well, much better than Varget or Re15 and it is a little faster so it should work a lot better with those little 40's

May I vote for Alliant RL-10x? For 36 to 60 grain loads in a 1-in-12" twist barrel, this is a great powder. For 60 to 80 grainers, I'm sure Alliant RL-15 powder would lead the way to accuracy, but since I don't have a 1-in-9" twister, I can only assume. Love RamShot X-Terminator powder for 36 to 55 grain bullets, but velocitywise, RL-10x cannot be beaten with in "SAMMI" guidelines. Cliffy

I may as well put in my .02 worth. I would say 2230 is a great powder. It measures easily and runs them bullets real nice for me, I use the Hornady 40 V-maxs in my 20Tac and Hornady A-maxs in .223AI. To fill the case more use 2520 as dreever suggested

I love my surplus wc844 which is the same as h-335.You can get it at HI-TECHAMMO.COM for 99.00 for 8 lb's. It burns clean and can be used in a variety of weights.

I found Win748 to be pretty dirty but gave excellent accuracy. I've had much better luck with IMR-4198, 3031, and 4895. They seem to give similar accuracy while burning cleaner. The benefit with the 4198 is that it's a fast powder, so the charge weights are lower and a pound goes further.

Hodgdon H4198 is perfect for 35-55 grain bullets and Alliant RL-10x powder is PERFECT for 36-60 grain bullets in a 1-in-12" twister. TWIST matters, so 1-in-8" twisters through 1-in-7" super twisters, may benefit from something I'm not familiar with to date. RamShot X-Terminator powder has always served my 1-in-12" twist 22" barrel well. Also in an AR-15 1-in-9" twist 16.25" barrel with a powder charge of 23.2 grains of X-Terminator with 52 grain target hollow points can win rapidfire tournaments often. EASY recoil and EXTREME accuracy helps. CCI 400 or CCI 450 primers seem to make little difference in these light loads. Cliffy

H322 or H335 are excellent although Benchmark is also a great choice. Pick whichever of these you have the most of or whichever is cheapest and you'll do well.

+1 on the H335. Good all-around powder for what you want and meters great through a Dillon 550.

+1 on H335.

I use it on 55 grain to 64 grain bullets with some VERY good results! Flows nicely out of volume-metric powder measures too! Can load in bulk, and it's pretty forgiving about brass variations.

I have been hearing good things about Ram Shot X-terminator. Im going to try some in my 22 and 6 ppc. Lee

The above responses are exactly why the .223 is such a popular caliber. It would be harder to find a powder that doesn't work; it's such an easy caliber to load for.
