Most accurate hunting rifle out of the box

Savage

Although if we're including old "out of the box" rifles (I'm a new guy here and will probably get thrown out over this) Remington 788, ugly as heck but the two I bought way back shot factory loads into little cloverleafs. Still have em and they still shoot.
Yeah, how do they do that? They have 9 locking lugs.....in the rear of all places and a smallish 1x20 tpi tenon. One of the best Hunter Class shooters in the game of Benchrest (Frank McKee) got a large percentage of his wins with 788's.

Yeah, I know. Go figure.
I think if they still made them I'd buy more though. First one was my first centerfire rifle in 6mm Rem and I took it deer hunting all over. Beat it up a little and it just kept shooting.

It looks like halfmoanut, the originator of this thread, is not answering the questions asked of him, or her. That leaves us without the information we need to accurately answer this question. What is the most accurate rifle out of the box? To many variables to get an accurate answer without some specifics.

I "restored" my buddies 308 788. When all done I ran some Fed GM thru it and it ticked me off. Shot within a gnats hair as good as my 40X. Never saw a 788 that did not shoot very well.

I love the 788 . I have too many and will be selling a few . A 6 mm rem , 222 , and a 223 . Oh and a 22-250 . The 222 and 223 out shot my varmint rem 700 back in the day so I sold both of the 700 and kept the 788.
Amazing rifles .
Same tenon as Mossberg ATR , by the way.

I turn 70 in late May and am moving my household from NY to AZ.

I just gave my two favorite hunting rifles to the next generation.

My Daughter gets my as-new Savage Predator Hunter Max .260, and my Son-in-Law gets my faithful M70 .30-'06 which won 4th in the 1997 NJ Sniper Rifle Championship (using FGMM 168gr Match). I bought the M70 in 1995 used, and it has some sort of ancient B&C synthetic aftermarket hunting stock. Neither have match weight barrels.

In my estimation, a hunting rifle is capable of harvesting deer. For hunting, I use Nosler Accubonds. I shoot "hotter-ish" loads with the Accubonds, 43.5-44gr of H4350 with the .260/6.5mm 140gr Accubond; 46gr of IMR-4064 with the .30-'06/.30cal 165gr Accubond.

I suspect the Hornady 139SST American Whitetail.260, and Federal Premium 165SGK .30-'06 loads will be pretty close.

A good number of years ago, I threw around the term Optimal Charge Weight, but not in the currently (later) construed context. My version of OCW referred to something more elusive, a load that shot well in a large selection of rifles, much like FGMM does.

The above load for the .30-'06 is nearly identical with my own "FGMM Surrogate" load, 46.1gr of IMR-4064 with the 168gr SMK; and shoots well in all of my factory .30-'06 rifles, including my Garand.

No supprise few rem,win or Rugers. Looks like its sako or savage. lve had them all except ruger.worst were win and weatherby. Remington's can be blue printed to be accurate, but we are talking out of the box. My two most accurate out of the box rifles are savage lrp 260 sub half moa and a lrh 7mm. I think the floating bolt head is the reason

My Cooper's shoots better than any bolt rifles I have. The Phoenix in 308 is capable of .3" 5 shot groups with Black Hills 168's and maybe a tad bit better with Federal GMM 168's.

The topic with a life unto it's own. Two years later and it's still going on.

Of course the answer is Savage. Still like Ruger American for the money.

Would like to hear opinions on which out of the box rifle is the most accurate for hunting western game? Mule deer & Elk. Will hand load, also will accurize by bedding action and floating barrel.
got 2 ruger America in 7mm08 for the kids. tried everything and both guns should have been called shotguns and I have shotgun that shoot better than those 2 rifles!!!!

Tikka sporter 22-250, plastic stock, random 15 yo handload = 1/2" 3 shots at 420. Sako hunter 25-06 110 Fowler low ones at 100 indoors. Sako hunter 300 WM 185 Berger 30 consecutive hits on 18" x24" rock at 1200 off rolled up jacket on hood of truck. Savage Palma second hand totally stock 155.5 Berger = 5 shots at 550 yd into smallest .495", largest 1". 168 hybrid into 1.5" at 1000 for 3, 2.5" for 5, off Flex-Pod under ideal conditions, and repeatable. Pick one

I think most factory hunting rifles. Sporter weight hunters with a good scope and bench set up and a good tuned hand load will shoot 1moa to 1/2 moa at least most of them I have owned and most I have seen shoot others have owned. Factory ammo is a toss up I have had some shoot excellent actually quite surprising and some not so good. Most of the Kimbers,coopers,40x's,heavy'er barreled savages I have owned have shot about as well as most custom rifles. With a factory rifle you can always get a bad one that just wont shoot I have had a few. A custom rifle will almost always shoot as well as it was intended. Although I had one built that would not shoot very well at all and I bought two customs that also did not shoot very well at all.. So my pick for most accurate out of the box factory rifle would be the savage model 10 Predator hunter max1 I have had one and another guy has one that will shoot .350's It is a bit heaver than some would like for a hunting rifle but. I just think most of them will shoot unless you get a dud. I think you have to pick one you like and is in your price range go with it...I am going to try a Nosler 48 myself I just like all the features and I think it should shoot as well as anything I could build comparable to it.
