7-08 as a hunting cartridge

This was back in 2001. My brother has the video but is in VHS format. I know old school....not even sure how to convert VHS to digital format.

Our guide warned us to use at the time the bullet equivalent to barnes now. I can't remember the bullet name but that is what I used and dropped my pig with no problem. However, my brother didn't listen and used a softpoint instead.

I'll work on the video...

so anyone who has shot a elk with a oh so small 7mm is under gunned? and those damn bow hunters are really asking for trouble then huh? I was in colorado 2 years ago archery hunting and did not feel like my set up with my stubby draw length was not going to do the job. did not shoot anything but would have if the opportunity was there. if those 7mm's are to small then the states should change the laws on legal implements as well. CO is 6mm 100 GR and needs 1000 FPE at 100 yards (last I checked the laws 2 years ago) there has been many taken with a 243, 7mm-08, 7x57, 6.5x55 ect. those are so "anemic" you know. then you can go into the handgun arena and look at the energy numbers on the straight wall revolver rounds. even the 7mm-08 puts them to shame but damn I see pictures and read stories all the time about successful hunts. I would load up my 15" encore 7mm-08 and take it elk hunting any day. right bullet in the the right spot dead animal. like a earlier post said no lungs = dead anything

this is pointless, lets just agree that the 7-08 is a good round and since everybody has their own oppinion on its capabilities
we should just leave it at that. if someone uses it on elk and it works for them that is great if you would rather have something bigger that is fine also, but i see no reason to argue when nobody is going to change their mind. so we will just agree to disagree on this subject, sound good, does to me.

On the other end of the spectrum, a few years ago I shot a 300 lb. Russian boar with my 7-08. The range was all of 15 yards! One squeal and it fell over dead. The bullet was a 139gr. Hornady BTSP Interlock in front of W748 powder...

twoodard,
Whatever!!

Scharms,
My wifes 7mm-08 shoots the same bullet very well and also the 140 acubonds very well. I bought her a camo hunting blind and am hoping to get her close like that, hopefully under 50 yds anyway and I am sure she will do fine, if not I will have a good elk stopper with me to help her out but am confident she will do fine on her own. In the country I live and hunt in I prefer a caliber for elk that will penetrate and brake bones, but hunted for years as a young man with a .243 winchester with good success. I don't want her flinching with my 325 wsm and making a bad shot and possibly ruining hunting for her altogether. I think for her, key shot placement is much more important and am confident if I can cohort the elk past her she will kill her first elk with it.
I hope next season I have a story similar to yours ;)
Wayne.

Amazed to see this topic still being discussed. The 7-08 is a fine cartridge. Having said that I have switched over to a 308. My job in LE gives me a lot of access to once fired match 308 brass. Being an expensive component of reloading I am saving a good bit. Also in a pinch 308 ammo is much easier to find and I can buy bulk, to hold incase of any shortages. All of my shots are under 400 yards, most under 100 and the last two bucks I shot were under 10 yards, a fluke I guess.

Already ordered a Bell and Carlson ultra lite for my SPS Stainless DBM 308. A little trigger work and barrel break in will take place this weekend. Scope is a Nikon Monarch UCC 3-9x40, Talley lightweight rings.
