Most Accurate 308 Bullet for 100/300 Yards

I want to know with which. 30 Cal Bullet you got the highest Accuracy in a 308 for 100/300 Yards.

I'm from Europe and we have a discipline, which is very similar to F Open, but on 100/300m. My Goal is to build a Rifle for both disciplines, 308 for the above 7mm Class and a 284 Win or one of its many Wildcats for Open.

I'm thinking about the 150/155 to 168 Range, but not sure which one to choose.

I just started using the 168 TMK in a custom .308 hunting rifle. I shot a few groups that came in under 1" @ 400yds. Varget shot well but 44.0gr of RE15 was the ticket. Loads at .020" & .037" off the rifling both shot surprisingly small groups.

The rifle has just over 1,600 rounds down the tube but the Tesla shows only marginal wear. Most of my barrels are toast long before they get anywhere near that volume.

Are you limited to the 308 case or 308 caliber?

I ask because the short range score shooters almost exclusively use bullets in the 112-118gr range launched out of a 30BR.

Quite honestly this is what I think is the best solution. But...

If the requirement is for the .308 Win. cartridge then I use the Lapua and Re-15 as well. 30" barrel, prone format.

Enjoy!

No, i´m not limited to a 308 Case or Caliber.

I tought about the 30 BR, but ditched the idea.
Custom Bullets are hard to get, the best choice is the 115 Berger, but even that is Out of Stock for a long time. Rifles need to go to the Proof House after they are build and sometimes they are finicky with proofing wildcats. If you have a good Gunsmith, they will find a solution.
Main Reason is still, if can´t get bullets, i can´t use the Rifle.

I used Varget right after i got into reloading. But since the EU launched "REACH", Restricted use of Hazardous Materials", you can´t get Varget over here. H4350 and the majority of Hodgdon Powders, too.

Will a 308 not toss the shorty's accurately?
with the right twist, those rascals with be "hauling the mail"!

I would recommend the BERGER 115 or 150 GRAIN FB TGT bullet. Less recoil for the small diameter scoring rings at those yardages. Can help a lot with your score.

As i wrote above, the 115 Berger is popular and you´ll have to wait a long time to get them.
Can it be used in a Standard Chamber or does it need a shorter Freebore, cause it is a short bullet ?

The 150 should be easier to find, the 155 Range is available almost all the time.

An Option for a Cartridge could be the 30x47 Lapua, sometimes known as 308 Short, 30x47 HBR, ...

There is an Italian Version, called 30x47 GS, which has CIP. CIP is similar to SAAMI, they write the Specs and Blueprints for Cartridges and Chambers.
I know i can be used with 115 Grain Bullets and, from what i read, it is very accurate, almost 30 BR Range.
My Guess is, a 13" or 14" Twist is the best choice up to 155 Grain, for 115 and the like, you could use a slower twist.

A good friend tried some of my 112 grn 30’s in his 308 Savage FTR rifle.

even with the 1-12 twist and long throat, the accuracy was really good.

He was shooting what amounted to a case full of N-150 at arounf 3350 fps.

It was not as accurate as my 30BR, but not far behind.

Logic dictates yes.

I've shot some of Randy's light 118gr. .308s in a Win. cartridge but it seems like a waste of powder to me. Yes they were accurate enough, again not the 30BR.

:)

Since this one is CIP accepted, does this make it easier at the Proof House?

:)
Yes, it does. If it is build to CIP Specs, Proof House is no big deal. Proof House is mostly checking Headspace, some other dimensions and then a Pressure Test with 15-20 % Pressure over Max Cartridge Pressure to ensure, the Rifle or Handgun is safe to use.

I've had very good results with the regular 168 MK. A friend who worked for Sierra for many years and shot competitvely as well told me years ago that the 168 MK was all you needed as long as you weren't shooting over 600 yards. I haven't tried the other bullets some have mentioned here. They may work equally well, but the 168 MK might be a good place to start or at least include in the bullet selection.

While on this subject, what about the Hornady 168 Match bullet? You hear little about these. I've only used a few of the Hornadys and they shot very accurately, but I've had much more experience with the Sierra 168 MK.

I suspect it's like the Hornady 68 and 75 grain .22 Match bullets. They shoot well but not quite as well as the Sierras. It took a bunch of the .22 Hornadys and lots of load development to learn this. Is this the story on the .30 caliber 168 Hornadys?

In my mind, the question here is about windage, as opposed to pure precision. At 100 yd, a 30BR pushing a 115 to 120 gr custom FB bullet is clearly going to shoot the tighter groups. A .308 Win can certainly be made to shoot small, but not as small as a 30BR. However, at 300 yd the windage from the same 30BR load is going to be almost double that of a .308 Win with a high BC 168-185 gr bullet. I'm guessing having both is not an option, so which does one choose? One of the two is not going to be nearly as good as the other at either distance if there's much wind. So which would give up the least at the distance where it was not the best pick of the two? I'm thinking I might go with the .308 Win and a high BC bullet in the 168-185 gr range. Although probably not capable of 30BR precision at 100 yd, it could still shoot small at 100 yd and would hold a significant advantage at 300 yd.

Along that line of thinking, I have been very pleased with the precision obtained from various .308 Win F-TR rifles using Berger 168 Hybrids, 185 Juggernauts, or 185 Hybrids over the years. Any can be made to shoot well with the appropriate attention to sorting and load development.

Been shooting .308 rifles for 30+ years, I have 6 different rifles in .308..all of my rifles shoot the best groups with 165-168gr bullets ,a variety of different powders work well, but I prefer varget or shooters world precision
