Money for nuthin..........

Whoa!! second page already? This thread ain't done yet.

Whilst at the scrap yard yesterday the manager gave me these 304 SS scale weights a local lab dropped off. There were dozens of them scrapped, all like new. The big one is 11.0000 lbs. Might come in handy some day when certifying whole bench rest rifles or something.
Did you get the beer there, too? If so, I'm going THERE!

Well done. There's none to pick up at my range except for 20 or 30 cases now and then in the bucket. I guess the trade off is when I go I have the place to myself 75% of the time. There's also no one there spraying AR'S when I'm doing load development.

These .223 guys expend the most ammo. 2/3 of the brass was mixed .223. I do not have one in any form.

This is for sure. When I got there on Sunday there was one guy on the 200 yard line. AR15, he just finished burning up almost 300 rounds in that barrel. He then pulled it and but on a .300 Blackout. After burning thru about 200 rounds in that he pull out another .223 AR15 and started on it. In the meantime the benches filled up with mostly black rifles. All brass was left on the ground. The other 2ranges were worst.

Before the Age of Obamination, 2009 to 2017, brass was there for the pickings. Not as much now but still have the
mag dumpers, gotta love 'em. On a good weekend day, have recycled 500 rounds of .223 laying on the ground. Same with the Glockers, high capacity mags are your friend. :p Money for nothin' (except for gas).:D

Heres a quick tip/story. Where im from the nearest range is an hour away, so most people shoot at this old coal pit that has been used to dump trash at. I showed up one day and guys where shooting off of the hood of their truck and complaining that they would like to have a bench of some sort. About a week later I went out there and dug through the scrap piles and managed to find enough lumber to throw together a small bench. I come back the evening after everyone was sighting in their rifles for rifle season and picked up hundreds of rounds of different types of brass on the ground in that one spot. The fact that I had built a bench caused everyone to use it and in return all the brass was in one area and easy for me to find. Before that i would always have to walk all over the place trying to figure out where they parked at and shot from

I have a private range and let certain people use it. Lots of AR people who don't reload. So I trade range time for brass. Built a precision AR and 20 Practical last winter, and just ordered parts to build a 6x45 next. Infinite free brass.

Maybe two years ago I was picking up .223 brass. Noticed they had a look of quality to them. NORMA !!, nice. About 225 were converted to needed .222 at the time. That was a nice little winter project including outside neck turning. Still holding up well.

Just an FYI folks often prices for various metals can change once or twice a week, if you go to your scrap yard and they pay you less than last time no they arent to rip you off, yes the prices do change that often.
And for the love of god, if the company has RECYCLING in its name doesnt mean that they will take your old TV and no we dont know any one that can get that heavy ass thing out of your basement for free.

Very true. I check the daily price index when it gets close to a needed visit. I only have three buckets! I actually got 5 cents lb. more than expected. Why different regional prices play in puzzles me. I just got home from shooting with a half gallon bag full of .223....9's and .40 I did not expect any with all the rain we had here Mon. and Tues. That is a good start.

Not trying to derail this thread.....but I started it so I guess it's OK.

Was at the range today again shooting and scavenging for brass. Some crazy tossed 25 Weatherby brand .300 Weatherby and .270 Weatherby cases to the ground. Keeping them for sure. Along the road between ranges I come across this critter. He was an ornery 30 incher. I used a stick to persuade him to move off. He struck it several times before he retreated into the weeds. Saw a flat one there last week same size.

That Weatherby trasher probably felt risking life & limb outweighed what was paid for that 'once-fired' brass if picking it up off the ground stood any chance one of THOSE critters was lurking in the weeds focusing on the new, hot object close by.

Heads up to all you brass scroungers. I just dropped off 240 pounds of mixed range pick up brass. To my surprise the price paid for yellow brass took a 30 cent per pound drop. Just 4 weeks ago I dropped 180 pounds off and got $1.82 lb. Today I got $1.55 lb.....grrrrrr. The market adjusted three times since four weeks ago @ .10 cents per week. Still got a good wad of cash for reloading components. The wife helped me some and "earned" 1/3 of the money. More flowers for her gardens coming.

The scrap dealer blamed it on the current "tariff trade war" with China. I did not check the scrap index prices before the one hour trip to town. Sell now, he expects lower prices to come.

If I had gone out ahead of you, there would have been 2 flat ones

After I drove over it I would have gone back to take a second look, then maybe used a spatula to toss him off the road...

At my range (which is a public range) we do not allow brass mining. If it's your brass you can pick it up. At the end of the day, or the next morning before the range opens, we sweep it up.
The brass gets sold for scrape, and the money goes to the 4H youth gun program. This way we get a new generation of shooters.
