Moly coated vs. naked bullet question on powder charge...

Just wondering what kind of powder charge decrease I should expect to see when I switch from moly coated bullets to naked bullets?

I am currently shooting 36 grns of H4350 with a moly coated 80 grn sierra. I am going to try the naked 75grn A-Max with the same powder, just wondering what kind of decrease in max powder charge I can expect to see. (or even if it was the same bullet)

Thanks!

The maximum safe powder charge will go down. Impossible to say how much. When I have switched back to uncoated bullets, I just went back to the loading manual, and started with the recommended powder charges listed, and worked from there. You have to treat it like a different bullet, which it is.

If you've been shooting moly coated bullets very much, a ring of moly can form in front of the neck or throat and pressures will start to climb. I found it pretty difficult to clean the moly out. I don't moly coat any bullets except the Barnes X's any more. I don't know how the Triple Shocks compare to the X's, but I had major fouling with .338 and .458 cal X bullets. I still moly coat the .458's, but I don't shoot anything but un-coated 300gr Smkhp's in the .338 x .378 now.

Good shooting, Tom

Want to know all about Moly coated bullets? German Salazar gives you the lowdown here with four seperate articles in his September 2009 issue of The Rifleman's Journal: http://riflemansjournal.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

A sample ... from the Norma Report:

"Briefly we have found that molycoated bullets do:

* decrease pressure by 3-5% depending on cartridge, bullet and powder
* decrease velocity with 0.5 - 1.5% - reduce metal fouling
* increase accuracy under certain circumstances
* very likely increase barrel life"

The David Tubb article is the one that will probably most answer your question.
