what exactly is a molly coated bullet? Is this the cheap rounds that you pick up at walmart? The reason i ask is because im about to break in a 22-250 barrel and have read that its bad to do so with molly coated stuff...

Moly = Molybdenum disulfide, an inorganic compound with the formula MoS2. This black crystalline sulfide of molybdenum occurs as the mineral molybdenite.

Moly was popular 5 - 10 years ago. People thought it was the second coming. It is a,black and filthy) dry lubricant that was applied to bullets, and the belief was that it would work miracles - barrels would last forever, and almost never need cleaning, etc... it does have some serious draw backs.

It has mostly fallen out of vogue. My local gun shop has shelves of moly'ed bullets that he can't give away.

The subject of moly bullets is very contentious and the disagreements over whether it is God's gift or a fraud, will draw blood.

You can brake in a barrel using moly. I have used moly for years. Can not say whether it good or bad. My barrels do seem to last a little longer and I know I can put more down the barrel before cleaning.

I experimented with it, tumbling bullets in the powdered form and spraying loaded bullets with the Ms Moly. In general, it lowered velocity measurably, didn't improve accuracy, built up in front of the throat, and made it hard to tell if I was still getting powder residue on cleaning patches, or residual moly. On the plus side, I believe it did help to break in some barrels with it, but not the best barrels. It seems to be a good treatment in lead bullet muzzleloader barrels, and I still tumble Barnes X bullets in it. It does cut way down on copper fouling from those bullets. I don't use it much anymore because I don't shoot many Barnes X bullets anymore.

Nothing scientific, just observations and opinions. Like Cat said, there was a lot of attention on it and that mostly died down. As I recall, quite a few shooters tried it and some probably still use it extensively.

If you don't let it build up in the bore, I don't believe it will hurt anything.

I think that the Moly coated bullets are to slick to break in a barrel the proper way.
Something to think about I guess...........
I have a darned near full spray can of MsMoly and anyone that wants it just ask and it's your's.
It's been around a while......

I've been coating bullets with Danzac, tungsten disulfide) for a couple years now and can find zero drawbacks. I shoot many thousands of rounds through several custom barrels per year in Benchrest competition. I cant say that it lengthens the life of any barrel, but it definitely lengthens the time between cleanings. I have shot as many as 5 aggs between cleanings with seemingly no affect on accuracy. I have a friend who cleans his main competition rifle once a year, whether it needs it or not:D. I coat my bullets using a tumbler half full of #9 lead shot, 1,000 bullets, and about a 1/8 teaspoon of Danzac for 1.5 hours. It's not messy like Moly is and the bullets come out as pretty as a factory finish. Also, the coating does not wipe off onto your hands during loading like moly does.
