Molly coated bullets

Thank again for this info.

I inherited two 500 count boxes of these Sierra 175 MK with the factory applied moly coating. I plan on using them for F/TR in a Win 308.

About twenty years ago I tried the Sierra 168 MK factory moly coated, and what a pain it was trying to clean the barrel bore. The thing was that after a comprehensive bore cleaning, it took anywhere from six to ten fouling shots to get the bore conditioned before it would group small again.

Thought I'd reply with an update.

The uncooked dry white rice worked really well at scrubbing off the molybdenum disulfide coating from the bullets. I ran the vibratory polisher with no wet polish for two hours. I then dumped rice, wipe the vibratory polishers bowl out with brake cleaner as it left a coating of the molly on the inside of the bowl. I then ran the bullets in the vibratory polisher again with fresh ground walnut shell for two hours. Made the bullets look like they just came from Sierra without the Molly coating.

Thanks again for the advice using the dry uncooked white rice.

Tumble in corn cob or walnut media with some bore solvent like butches or shooters choice. I don't recall any molly embedment in the bowl doing this.

I've tumbled them before with success, but separating the bullets from the corn cob media was a pita because the holes in my media separator are too big and they fall through.

Decided to try the ultra sonic with vinegar one day and it worked really well. Took maybe 10 minutes and after rubbing them down with a microfiber cloth, they look like new.

I have some Sierra 175 gr MK that are Molly coated. I want to remove the molybdenum coating. What is the best method ?

Get a bottle of liquid Bar Keepers Friend (I got my at Lowes), the spray/foam. Take the cap off and pour enough solution into a small dish. Just enough to cover the bullets. Let soak 2 minutes at most. Wipe dry. Moly coat is gone. See my results in picture.
