Modifying MagnetoSpeed Chrono

Has anyone personally modified their MagnetoSpeed chrono so that it will work with a 1.25" dia. barrel? If so, what did you do and How did you do it? I need the mod to get mine working.

I saw a pic on Snipers Hide of one that had apparently been modified by the factory. The "V" end of the Bayo appeared to have been milled/planed down to allow the barrel to sit lower. I would try it myself except plastic is difficult to work with ordinary tools and I can envision it sailing across the basement if I tried grinding it down on my belt sander.

Anyone?

Just curious.....did you ask the folks at Magnetospeed?

I've found them to be very responsive to my questions and observations.....

George....Yes, I have queried them directly on June 10th and I agree that they are very responsive. Here is their next day response to my query about using with 1.25" barrels.

''Frank,
Good to hear from you. The 1.25" barrel will probably put the bayo sensors too far from the projectile edge. The same problem exists for suppressor users. We are working on some custom units for mounting to larger diameters, but these require some "massaging" by hand. These look a bit rougher and will cost considerably more ($350-$450 ea.) because of the added labor and design (if necessary). We are still doing testing of this concept, so nothing is officially ready just yet. Hope this helps, let me know if you need any more info. It is possible that we will offer a unit to accommodate suppressors and larger diameter barrels in the future if we get enough interest. What type of bullet construction do your rounds have? If they are magnetic in any way it may be possible to pick up some sort of signal.

Best Regards,
Garet Itz"

I choked on paying an additional $100-200 for what I saw on Snipers Hide, ergo my question to this audience.

Thus far, no personal MS modifiers.

I don't have a MagnetoSpeed but if I were to have one that needed to accommodate large barrels and suppressors I'd just look to replacing the whole mounting bracket with something similar to an adjustable trailer hitch (although a lot smaller 8) ). An attachment to the barrel that allows for the sensor to be raised and lowered through a range, and positioned with the aid of a rod inserted in the bore. Insert the "alignment tool", raise the sensor until it is at the optimum height, and secure it with locking nuts/bolts.

Take a look at travel trailer hitch and visualize the concept. The alignment tool could be similar in shape as an expander mandrel with one end sized to fit in the barrel and the other a diameter that would have a radius equal to the optimum spacing of the sensor. Make it hard plastic to avoid any scratching of the rifling.

Let your imagination be your guide 8)

I contacted Magnetospeed and was very impressed with the quick and complete answer.

I did find out they will supply the sensor assembly without the part that clamps to the barrel. It is replaced with a vertical piece of G10 Epoxy glass sheet that you can connect to what ever you want to. You could adapt it to a custom clamp around your fat barrel, or fasten it to a bench rest so it doesn't load the barrel and screw up tuning.

Is it a fitment issue or a sensing issue? If a sensing issue, try setting the bullet type to shotgun/slug. I had to do that to pick up the 17hmr on heavy barrel. Also, a spacer made of a sawn lengthwise 1" PVC or other pipe may help. The strap is long enough.

There is a new group on Facebook called MagnetoSpeed Users Group and we have developed a working mod to allow for use of a Sporter or V3 for more flexible locations and to NOT have to hang the chrono from the barrel but be attached to the stock. It should allow for no barrel harmonic disruption issues and better POI solutions and no longer a shift. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1938325769769092/
