MN State MR F-Class Championship Match

Hey Shooters,
It is not too early to register for the MN State Mid-Range F-Class Championship August 23-24, 2014 at the Elk River Sportsman's Club. We have added 3 more carriers to better accommodate the growing number of shooters attending F-Class matches here in MN, range capacity is now 92 shooters.

Don't forget to order a T-shirt or two as well! I am told this will be the hottest fashion item at the 2015 matches!

This is killing me! My rifle won't be done yet.

might have to reconfigure the Savage back to target mode to make it

That might work for you. It worked for me yesterday at the 2nd annual Balloon Shoot in Columbus, WI. I shot five clean balloon sets in a row (310 yds, 440 yds and 540 yds in switchy winds) with my Savage LRPV 6BR. After shooting three cleans and winning the Factory rifle class Sunday, I decided the rifle was shooting so well that I would keep shooting it against the custom rifles. It shot a clean in the qualifying round and clean in the match. There was a four way tie for first place (my Savage and three custom rifles). The tie was broken by five shots on a NBRSA 600 yard target. The savage held 1.7" vertical on the first four shots, but they were all high along the top edge of the blue 9 ring. I pulled the crosshairs down to the bottom of the 8 ring and hit the X in the X ring with the last shot (yes, I could see the bullet holes with the Nightforce 55x).

As the target crew was driving out to get the targets, I asked those other three top shooters from around the country, "Wouldn't it be funny if I kicked all you guys' A$$es with this factory Savage? They gave me a long look and one of them said, "No. That wouldn't be funny at all."

Well, I won it by two points. Never underestimate a Savage LRPV with a good driver behind it! BTW, the bore in that gun looks like a railroad track, but it sure shoots. That last shot in the X ring was the 147th round out of the gun since I had cleaned it before the match.

Way to go LRGooger! You gonna buy a T-shirt?

Nah. I might if I went to the range and shot a match, but I'm too old and back busted to lay down and shoot F class. The balloon matches are off concrete benches.

I bet they would eat that balloon match report up over on the Savageshooters forum.

How did you do on Saturday?

You would have to ask. LOL

Actually, I shot a clean with the Savage in Saturday's match as well, but I shot the wrong balloons at 440. The problem was the way they had the balloons set up (which could have been completely avoided by simply putting bench numbers on the targets). They alternated red, white, blue and yellow balloons for the ten benches. The balloon bags were placed much closer to each other at the 310 yard range because of limited space. At the 440 and 540 yard ranges they were spaced farther apart but the right color balloons for 540 were directly above the ones at 440. Not so for the 310 yard balloons. I had red and I shot my 310 yard balloons first. By the way, you only have 10 minutes to shoot 14 balloons (4@310, 5@440 and 5@540) with 17 rounds, so you don't have any time to waste. In the heat of the hurry, I raised my front rest straight up from 310 yards to 440 yards and found myself on a bag of red balloons, so I shot them. After I shot all five, I realized what I had done and notified the range master (Terry Balding). I then went on to shoot the right 540 yard balloons and came back and shot two of my own 440 yard balloons with the two extra shots I had. That was good enough for a tie for fourth place. I lost the tiebreaker and got fifth. I was furious with myself for making that mistake as I would have won it outright with the clean, and the first place prize was about $150.

I had a huge handicap I could not overcome in the custom qualifying round Saturday. I had no spotter who could see vapor trails to call my misses (they are allowed and almost a necessity during qualifying rounds if you miss a shot). I cleaned them at 310 and 440, but I could not find them at 540 without a good wind call on my misses (the wind was very switchy). I had a widely spaced bag of balloons and was unable to find them by trial shots, so I didn't qualify for the custom match Saturday. There are no sighters on match days and not knowing for sure where my custom was dialed in at 540 was part of the reason I chose to shoot the Savage in custom on Sunday. After three cleans in a row with it, I was pretty confident it was well dialed in and could do the job, and it did with two more cleans and a great tie breaker to win the custom class Sunday. I felt a lot better after that.

This was the second annual balloon match held at the Columbus, WI Sportsmans Club and they are modeling it after the defunct VHA jamboree balloon matches insomuch as is possible. Terry has learned a great deal in the course of running the two matches and will hopefully have the bench numbers on the targets next year. I was not the only one to shoot the wrong balloons. We as shooters are learning match strategy. No spotters are allowed except for qualifying rounds. The top ten scores qualify for the shoot-off match and no spotters are allowed, so if the wind is switchy and you miss, you better hope you have a way figured out to tell which way it went. It is NOT easy. There was a wind switch after I broke the second of five balloons while I was shooting 540 in the factory shoot-off round Sunday and it took all three of my spare rounds to get the switch figured out. (I developed some top secret tricks that help figure it out since then.) I had just enough rounds left to finish the 540s (I started at 440 and cleaned them) and come back in to 310 and nail them. My other cleans were accomplished without missing a shot and I had three rounds left over each time. After I did that in the custom shoot-off Sunday with my Savage, Terry walked over and said, "The way you do that makes it almost look boring."

Not hardly, Terry! Thanks for a great match and a great time!

BTW, Mark Antes won the custom tie-breaker Saturday with a remarkable 8, 10, 10, 10, 10 (1x) on the 600 yard NBRSA target. Great shooting Mark!

probably going to do that. It'a a straight up hunting gun that I have used for a few competitions, because it's all I have. It has served me well, but it's not a competition gun, and not meant to be.

in theory, my competition rifle could be cone in time, but not counting on that, so the Savage will be ready to go. this mainly means taking off the lower power scope for hunting and putting my SIII back on it.

How does Saturday work if you want to shoot but do not have a team? I might find one or two guys that are interested.
Troy

From what I heard during the Monday night league, there are several partial teams that are still looking for others to make up a full team. You should get there early on Saturday and let those taking registrations know that you are looking to get on a team or that you need 1 or 2 people to round out your team. Should be a lot of fun with the number of people that have already put teams together.

Don't let the fact that you don't have a team to shoot on. There will be plenty of scratch teams made up so all can shoot. Team shooting is also great practice for the individual matches on Sunday. Don't discount scratch teams, a scratch F-TR team won the MN midrange regional in June!

There is still room for shooters so drop me a note, we will get you registered. T-shirts are going fast!

They're calling for rain. I hope the forecast changes by then.

Lot of good shooters this year lined up to shoot. Whatever the weather, we're gonna see some awesome scores.

I heard the "BIG HIG" was pulling the camper up to the firing line in case we get some rain... ;D. Cost of admission will be a bottle of Crown.

Shooters,
Bring your pop-up canopies if you have one. We might need them for shelter Saturday and Sunday. the forecast keeps looking up but you never know.
