Mitutoyo Calipers, Buying The Real Deal

Any tools made in switzerland are the best- etalon is one. Brown and sharpe are good and federal-mahr. Then mitutoyo comes in next then everything else. Its all in what you need- its rediculous to have tenth readings on a caliper but some swear by it. If you know anything about actual metrology you know what im talking about. Go measure a bullet then just touch it in another spot and the reading changes. Find a good set of dial calipers and a micrometer and thatll do everything we need to do in the gun world. I use a 4” mitutoyo dial caliper and brown and sharpe mic for my machining and ive never been undergunned for sure. I have every brand there is in indicators, depth mics, calipers etc and thats what gets used. My chambering uses fixtures and such to measure so thats mostly indicators and those are federals for the most part.

I guess we all have had to live and learn that the cheaper price usually means what it implies. Although one lesson I recently had was about my digital calipers not holding zero. While searching for a replacement I learned about maintenance and operation , both being in error on my part. Thinking if it moves and its steel then use a lube, WRONG ! Keep the calipers clean and wiped free of any dirt and oil. Use the thumb wheel only and slowly when approaching closure on an object.
Both pairs I have ( not the most expensive ) seem to be working much more consistently. As for now a new caliper purchase is on hold for me.
acetone or denatured alky or contact electrical spray is best to clean with & q tips

I have an Igaging, and about a half dozen Harbor Freight. Of the Harbor Freight over half, four of them work as good as anything and can be trusted but I wouldn't recommend that.

I have real Mitutoyo calipers Absolute coolant proof, fit and finish is perfect that's where the knockoffs fail, Mitutoyo can take a licking and still work perfect, Digimatic Mitutoyo calipers won't hold up in a hostile environment
I have the absolute coolant models as well and am pleased with there durability so far...
