Mitigating "Bolt Click"...Not a hot load

I'm using a 284 Shehane and my brass is 10x+ fired Lapua brass. Pockets are still decent as I am not shooting a hot load at all. I'm using 55gr H4831SC, so I am well below max pressures.

I noticed I started to get a few rounds with a noticeable "bolt click" as I am open up the bolt after firing.

I heard of people using a small base die to size the base down. I also heard of people having their sizer dies made such that it sizes down the base of the brass a little more than "standard" dies.

Are these the only two options?

For the most part yes. How much does your die size the base? At this point it may be hard to get them to size back down. If you can find a die that will size the base a little more and use it from day 1 you will avoid this. The redding dies that Bill Shehane sells for the Shehane size a lot, may be too much.

As stated getting on it from the beginning will avoid the problem. Now that it is happening, depend on how far gone the brass is you may or may not be able to get it back. I started to feel it on my 6br and caught it early and a small base die cured the problem.

What are you sizing down the base to? So say my fired brass is measuring at the web ~ 0.499". What should the die be sizing this down to? 0.498"?

At the base, I myself like a 1/2-thousandths at least, on experienced brass (+1 on fresh brass).
A little more up at the shoulder, like +1-1/2 thousandths.

How will the Redding Comp Shell-holders get rid of the "bolt click"?
And/or size the base more?

Thanks
Donovan

Redding’s Competition Shellholder Sets are good stuff for helping folk to limit the amount of shoulder bump, but it’s by introducing less, in .002” increments, of the case’s length into and so what of it is to be acted on by a FL or body die.
