Too deep won't hurt but the lug shouldn't bottom out. Mainly in case anything gets under there when putting it back together, like a sliver of bedding material, for example. I typically bed the lug full contact but then take about .010-.015 off the bottom of the lug in a mill after pulling it all out and before final assembly. Works good that way too.Just wondering if there is a set depth that most will mill a recoil lug recess for a Rem 700 stock? I am thinking the depth really doesn't matter, I can always go back with bedding material and fill in if the recess is too deep?
I have a stock that was supposed to be milled for a Rem 700 but the stock is only milled down to .150", I don't have my action to check but I am guessing that is way to shallow. I was just going to mill it deeper but wanted to at least get an estimate of about how far I should cut the slot. I think I will just wait till the action is in hand before I start cutting.
