Middle Stuff: 6mm fare

what a large field of expertise this one caliber encompasses! Not BIG and Not SMALL. .243 Winchester leads the list, yet many specialized variants make this caliber super and neverending regarding usefulness: Hunting and Target uses pulverize small varmints, yet reach out to down medium-sized game, and perform for long-range target-shooting out to and beyond 1000 yards.

Looking for improvement in performance beyond .243 Winchester prowess at long-range hunting (350 yards) requires a tougher shoulder and an acceptance of more recoil resistance bodily. Even I can shoulder a .30/06 when required, but deer-sized critters do not require such extreme force. Roosevelt Elk equals a blend of .30/06 power, yet Whitetails do NOT require such massive power. A .264 Winchester Magnum rifle with 140 grain premium fare will kick hard, but will also drop animals far afield. When is too much, too much. I would never advocate .22 LRs for anything bigger than squirrels, yet a .243 Winchester, in my opinion, is too much horsepower for such small critters, including Chipmunks through Woodchucks. Even Coyotes are out-matched by a .243 Winchester's able force. A .243 Winchester is not a true varmint caliber, even if handloading can produce viably light loads: not necessary. A .243 Winchester was developed to hunt deer! Cliffy

There is a place for your 243/6mm posts, take a closer look at the forum that starts with the 6ppc, it does contain the subject matter your looking for. Your post would be far more suited there than here.
