Metting Other Shooters

I have a Question that might seem odd.. At the moment i only have one person i shoot with, and it would be nice to know more, I am a farmer and generally shoot in fields, as the closest long range to me is 45 miles, and its only 500m. At the moment i am not a member there but thinking of joining just to meet new shooters, but i tend to find that at ranges around here i only meet ( hunting shooters) not so much target shooters. What would you guys recommend in this situation?

Hey! You just did one good option. Posting here. A member here may live right around the corner from you. It's a little far for me, but I'd love to know somebody that had a private field to shoot across. I wouldn't have to deal with the "blasters" showering me with brass. Good luck, Josh

Build it and they will come. In other words, set up a simple one or two station 600/1000 yard range for your own enjoyment. Put the word out, and you'll attract plenty of shooting friends. If you lived close to me and let me shoot on your range, I'd reciprocate with something, perhaps an offer to anneal your brass.

just north of grand rapids MI, and building something might be a little difficult as most of the places i shoot are actual fields.. and actually building something isnt exactly an option but its more than adequate to shoot i feel. how ever someday id like to set something up...

Mozella, anywhere near East Tx? :)

Spike,
Many of us up here are also restricted in terms of the ranges available to us to shoot. But if you don't join (as well as post on this site) your local range, you'll never get the exposure you seek. And I suspect no matter the size or set up of your range, they'll have a Bulletin Board where you can post messages. And by posting messages, you'll likely find other shooters in your area who share your "discipline" in terms of target shooting. Beyond that, check out and find "local" sporting good shops or gun shops where you can also post "In Search Of" message to locate locals who may not come up on this or other shooting interest blogs. In short, be creative in your thoughts of seeking out other "Target" shooting enthusiasts. And find some NRA shooting competitions or sanctioned shoots within your state/area and just go, watch and rub elbows with shooters. Most folks at those NRA shoots are friendly and willing to talk to you about most anything having to do with their sports. Lots of good info out there. Think openly about locating what you seek. There are probably many more shooters and events out there than you ever imagined. Good luck in your search and keep posting up here as well. Funny how sometimes you just might meet someone (on a shooting site) or multiple guys who live with 10 - 20 miles from you who share your desires.

Spike A, there's Camp Grayling up well north of you for 1,000 yards, otherwise Kimball & Yipsilanti to the east. Go farther east to Camp Perry in Ohio, or south to Bristol (though I'm not sure how far you can shoot there).

What style of shooting you interested in meeting others who're involved? Internet will bring you organizations that focus on specific disciplines once you know what to <search> for.

I shoot NRA style stuff: highpower (4-position, 200 - 600 yards), mid- and long-range & fullbore, all prone from 300 to 1,000 yards. You may have to drive a bit to get to where folks are though....

Meanwhile, here's a link to a calendar prepared by Konrad Powers of highpower stuff in our area. Maybe it'll help?

i have tried some of those things.. most ranges around here are only 100 yds.. and dont attract much of the type of shooters im looking for.. when i go there i find i just end up helping guys figure out issues with there hunting set ups and giving them tips .. and when i start mentioning shooting 500 yds even they are in disbelief. i did find one local even but it was a 100- 200 yd event.. i figured on trying to make it to that to try to talk/meet some new people, not knowing if any of those shoot much over that or not but figured it would be worth a try and just fun to watch.

If it is a 100-200 it may be that little known and esoteric thing called Bench Rest...populated by fiendishly competetive and and very nice guys with spectacles and the look of mad scientists. You will love it

Funny, there's not much of it left around here either. Hardly any new shooters just a scattered bunch with 30 round magazines that seem intent on making noise as fast as possible. It's gotten to where if you have a gun you're looked at as a trouble maker or criminal. Sadly I'm left to shooting hogs and yotes myself without having to spend all day making a pilgrimage to one of the few remaining ranges within a reasonable drive. Even with over 60 acres I have encroaching homes that are limiting shooting on my own place. Sad times inded.
