My 22 cal. 14 twists ( 222, 22-250) actually preferred 50 gr. bullet weights. 55's were "good", but I could see the groups beginning to open up, just a little. The first indication that you are approaching the limits.
Keep in mind also that just because a barrel is supposed to have a 14 twist, and may even be idented as such, it could be a little slower, more like 1-14.5.
It would be best to load up 10 or 20 of each, take 'em out to the range & compare them side-by-side, under identical conditions. Some 55's may work well in "Joes" rifle, but not in yours.

I can shoot 55gr just fine cover a dime at 100yds. I shoot 52grBTHP and they can group a nickle at 300yds using 36.5gr Varget. but I wanted to go 500-600yds.
Mine would group the 55 grain Nosler bullets pretty good, but the 55 gr V-max were all over the place. I too found the 50s to be more accurate, and the Noslers were the best at that weight in my rifle. I tried some 60 grain Nosler partition bullets in it thinking it would be my back-up deer rifle and I quickly gave that idea up. Bad groups at 100 yards and crazy bad groups at 200 yards. Those bullets should would bust up a stump though. I'm not a big advocate of using such a small caliber for deer but I was impressed using those bullets. To bad they would not shoot good.
My Remington 700 with the factory barrel and then with a Shilen barrel had identical results to FDShuster's. His info is spot on IMO. My only suggestion is if you want to try 55's, like FD said, is to try short OAL bullets like the Hornady 55 SP bullets #2265. They are about the shortest 55's commonly available. For my part I would stick with the 50's and lighter and be confident that the rifle will shoot very accurately and hit the mark. What is your intended game (target)? I never shoot 500-600 yards and rarely 350. I would try a different BTHP or even a 53 flat base like the Sierra 1400's. They are not boat tails, but are very good in many rifles.

stability in twist is more a factor of bullet length and velocity. also twist are not always exactly 14 as stated, can be just under or over

Length has as much to do with your success as bullet weight. The 53 grain V-Max won't work because it's too long, same with the 50 Barnes
VG or any Barnes 50+ grains. The 55 V-max is also too long.
55 Soft points with lead cores are your best bet?

I have had outstanding accuracy with the remington 50 grain plhp bullet. It doesnt look as pretty as some bullets but they are devastating on game(varmints) . PLHP means power lok hollow points. They sell for about 16.00 /100
I will use this weapon for shooting at the range and but most of all varmet hunting. groundhogs and such. I am getting 3775 for an avg string of vol, and it will shoot 55gr vmax and 52gr BTHP using 36.5 grains of varget . I have tried the others you all said to with the 52gr i can get one ragged hole at 100yds. I am able to shoot out to 500yds with this load so long there isnt much wind , I was just woundering with this twist if i was stuck with using these lighter pills. Thanks all
With your 14 twist in a 22-250 your limit is pretty much gonna be 55 grain bullets. I found the best combo of weight and speed in the many 22-250's i have owned to be 52 grainers. The Nosler 55 BT's are better suited to 12 and 13 twist barrels. But try them if you get a chance. PM me and I'll send you a few to try, you pay the postage. Ok thanks all for your input, so when I burn this barrel up then go with something a little slower twist for the biger pills then?
stability is more a factor of bullet over all length than weight. the 55 sierra blitz will easily stabalize in 14 and the 55 blitzking which is longer may or may not. search bullet stability and i think lilja has an article and there are many from BR sights that explain that weight is not the decieding factor, bullet length is

My 22 250 (14" twist) like the 55 Nosler BT but I don't shoot at those distances mentioned in your post (500 -600 yards).
A fellow shooter who is a long range varminter - 500 yard+, uses 50 Nosler BT's out of his 14" twist custom 22 250 and does quite well when the wind isn't a significant factor.

i have a custom 22-250, 14 twist and with a "good" load of varget i can one hole with 60 gr, 62 gr, 64 gr bergers, 60 sierra and 63 gr cheek's. vv 540 works well also with these heavier bullets. neither the bergers nor cheeks stay together when shot thru a 9 or 8 twist. 60 hornady vmax will survive an 8 twist 22-250. i prefer heavies in my 22-250 even though the cartridge with 55gr bullets is considered the ideal match.

.22-250s weren't "gettin' it "for me, and I wanted a varmint rifle w/ good range capabilities.
My first custom .224" calibre wildcat I had chambered in a 24" 1-14. It has case capacity between .22-250 and .220 Swift.
I was able to make the 500yd club on a 510yd shot, but KE provided by the prototype
Hornady 55 "V"-Max I used was at the far corner of the achievable envelope.
When I re-barrelled, I used the same .224" cal wildcat, but more prudently went w/ a
28" K & P 1-8 SS 5-groove.
The combo was able to put 3,500fps on a 75 "A"-Max, which made it viable as a 1,000yd gun
My point:
If you re-barrel, I definitely recommend you increase you rengagement envelope; and go w/ a faster twist.
I only had a 75"A"-Max " shoot-through" a groundhog, once. I don't think any heavier .224" cal bullets would make for quite as good an all-around bullet; as did the 75 "A"-Max.
