Maryland, assualt weapon ban/ information needed

If anyone knows if ar15 and similar high capacity rifle's are prohibited in Maryland ? I googled it but it's a little hard to get solid yes/no answers. Any good information from someone in the know is appreciated. Is it like kalyfornya ?

You can possess hi cap mags but they can't be sold or transferred in state. As for AR's etc. there is a list of approved items. AR's must be designated heavy barrel or H Bar

It's hard to get solid answers because the laws are written in such a stupid fashion. Ar's have always been legal to own, purchase and possess in the state of Maryland. There have been some different requirements to purchase a new or used one from an FFL.
One example is that at one time if you had a 20" barreled rifle {or longer} the gun was treated like any other long gun and you only had to do the 4477. Shorter barrels or just a lower receiver had to be registered as what Maryland calls a "regulated firearm", which is to say it is treated like a handgun and requires state police registration and approval also. That has changed in the last several years. With the advent of the HQL {Handgun Qualification License} requirement to purchase a handgun {in addition to state police reg/approval} you are no longer required to do the full blown state police registration for an AR, but I was told you have to go online and fill out a form to receive a number. Take the state police number to your FFL dealer and he sells you the receiver. There is so much confusion in the way the communist liberal democRATS do things in this state that the last five lowers I purchased were all done differently over a period of 2 years.
As far as magazines go, not too much to worry about...that law is so ridiculous that even our local sheriff stated in public that "there is no way to enforce this law, so I wont even try"....they passed a law that says you cannot purchase or possess mags that hold more than ten rounds after a certain date. Not too many mags have the manufactured date on them. You cant buy them in Maryland, but a quick hop over to Virginia and you can buy all the mags you want and bring them home. Again, how would law enforcement know when you bought a mag with no date?? It's not illegal to buy them elsewhere, just not in Md. Can it get more retarded????
In short, I have lived here most of my life and was always able to purchase and own all the Ar's I wanted. The problem with Md. is that between the outskirts of D.C. and Baltimore slam chocked full of communist liberal idiots if every normal person voted three times we cant outnumber them, so it's hard to get decent effective laws passed and stupid ones repealed or amended.

Edit: in their latest brainstorm the lawmakers are trying to pass one that says all sales of all guns, dealer or private, must go thru an FFL. This is just about the stupidest thing I have heard yet....how do they expect this to ever be enforced?????
I say, "laws are written in a stupid fashion"...but honestly, it's almost like they are written just to put on a show.

What about that H-Bar stuff ? Heavy barrel only ? Do you know anything about that nonsense ?

Yes sir, I believe, best I can tell is that those are all outdated or "amended" laws at this time. When they were in effect you could go to a gun shop and purchase any AR with a barrel 20" or longer with only a 4477 and take it home immediately. But shorter barreled guns and bare lower receivers had to be registered with the MSP as a "regulated" firearm. It is my understanding that the MSP didn't have the time to do or room to store all the extra paper work generated by a rifle that could be changed in a matter of seconds with two push pins.
Just like the fired case with a new handgun thing...when the communist dems passed that one nobody thought to consider what it would cost to store all that stuff. There has been a lot of talk about amending that one too.
Bottom line, last week I purchased 3 lower receivers on a 4477 and NICS check and brought them home. 3 or 4 years ago I would have had to register them with MSP, wait the 7 days and have "designated collector" status or I could only get 1 per month.

Edit: three weeks ago, at a different gun store I was told about the going on line thing and getting an approval number from the MSP to purchase a lower. The gun store owner said he held it for 7 days too, but he seems to be the only one doing that. Sometimes dealers do their own thing and that creates even more confusion.

Looks like a lot of bad info in this link. Md. could care less what shape or "profile" your barrel is. They do not "favor" heavy or straight barrels. The so called "H-Bar" rule dates back to the 80's and the first gun ban, it hung in there though until about 6 or 8 years ago.
Also, believe it or not, Md. is one of the easiest "may issue" states to get a concealed carry permit. You just have to follow the rules when you apply and act happy jumping thru the hoops and don't say anything stupid when you do the interview. The permit is issued by the Maryland State Police and cops want to be the only kid on the playground with a big stick, they don't like it when they are not.

Msinc, without even asking you anything, I know you understand why I moved from Bowie in the Peoples Republic of MD to South Central PA 17 years ago. :)

Yes sir, I understand and as soon as my wife retires I will be leaving myself. Libtards aside, it's just way too expensive to live here as a retired person. I actually lived up that way too, 79-81. I worked at slope 33 mine in Ebensburg.

I’m pretty sure if you want to buy an AR in Md after 2013 it must be an HBar. Not to be disrespectful, but as a Md subject, I disagree with most of your post.

Living in Nova, a lot of Maryland guys hope over the Potomac to gun stores over here. Suffice to say, it is confusing as all hell as to what flies in MD but to some degree or another you can purchase an AR pattern rifle in MD. Your best bet, rather than to try to navigate this yourself and wander into hot water, drive down to your local gun store and talk to them. Not every piece of advice you get from a gun store is worth listening to but odds are the store owner and managers aren't going to let something that violates Maryland law to be sold in their store.

Best of luck to you, man.

I have many, many, many coworkers who have experienced this. They mention something about not being allowed to buy certain Colt HBars though - does that sound correct?

I too, disagree with most of your post. Heavy barrel is required on 5.56/.223 AR rifles in Maryland and it is very difficult to acquire a carry permit even when you meet the unconstitutional requirements set forth by the idiots that write the laws. Most that are issued permits, also get a list of restrictions.

No disrespect at all...I purchased these three, cash and carry, in the last 5 weeks. All I can say is, one of us must be shopping in the wrong place. The bottom two I purchased several years ago. As anyone can see, I don't have any trouble getting and owning AR's in Maryland, communist left wing liberal democRAT moron run state that we know it is!!!!I believe maybe a lot of gun shops err on the side of caution. I had zero problems getting one and then getting it renewed. I had to "prove I carried large amounts of money" and submitted 3 bank deposit slips. I thought this was crazy because none of my slips, as well as none that I know of have a name on them and they do not check account numbers {so MSP told me}. How did they even know the slips were mine??? Biggest thing is not to say anything stupid during the interview. The guy before me was asked by the trooper, "so I stick a gun in your back and say give me all your money!! What are you going to do??" The morons answer..."I'm gonna give it to you." {he was correct at this point} then he says to the trooper, "okay now lets finish the scenario, I give you the money, what are you gonna do??" The trooper said, " turn around and run away"...applicant: "and that warm pink thing running down you face will be what's left of your brain!!" Needless to say, no permit for him. Again, I had zero problems.
A lot of people like to speculate and repeat what they have heard. I am doing neither, I have been there and done that. Kind of like these folks that preach about how to clean a barrel...Q: what kind of borescope do you own?? A: ……….crickets

Edit: don't get me wrong fellas...I am not defending this communist libtard state...I hate it here and cant wait to leave. But I currently live here and some things are just not the way people keep repeating it.
