March Scope

One thing I have yet to see discussed is reticle subtension.
HOW LARGE OR SMALL ARE THE RETICLES?
What would this cover at 100yds at 40x?
Is it too large for varmints, too small for hunting, just right for both?

I notice they didn't list CROSSHAIR as an option...
I don't understand why any scope would NOT be offered in standard med-fine CH (ref NF CH1-CH3)..

Reticles are very important.

Thanks BHarvey, linked site does imply that a 'crosshair' reticle as available with this 80x sccope.
However, there is no mention of it, or specs for it, on their 'reticle' page.
Only declarations of dot moa per power.

Is there anyone who could describe the crosshair thickness w/resp to any known scope?

Bizaar also is this 8-80x scope is SHORTER than their 10-60x, but somehow has way less MOA of adjustment even though it's diameter has grown to 34mm. Is it actually 80x?

At 50 yards, our X is a dot about .040" to .050" in diameter.
The crosshair, on the fine crosshair model, is finer than the X, by a lot.
The 1/16 dot, at 60X is smaller than the X and represents a 'bump' on the crosshair, and is 1/24 moa.

The reticles are extremely fine.

I saw that the 8-80 is shorter, which is cool, I like short scopes.
The 10-60 has a narrower field of view than the fixed 60, at 60x, which makes it seem like it has more magnification.

I am sure the 80 is 80, or at least very close.

With the 10-60m you could put Gene's 4x eyepiece and get 14-84x.

Not sure how usable 80x would be outdoors, but indoors, for rimfire BR in the winter, the 10-60 is usable at 60x with the modifier disc in place.
So, at least on paper, the 8-80x, without the disc would be as bright or slightly brighter.

Outdoors, the upper end of the 10-60 is usable a good bit for rimfire BR except on the worst days mirage wise.

When I shot 1k comps, the fixed 40x was great, but times when mirage was really bad had me wanting less power. But, this was at a range that was usually bad enough you could see, and read the mirage from the firing line with the naked eye. On a more open range, it might not be as bad.

I believe you guys, who say its the best scope made as far as resolution and tracking, but I have a problem with a 5 year warranty to the original owner only. These scopes are not proven for long term reliability, being that they are fairly new. I am NOT bashing these scopes at all. And I would be concerned about cost of service and shipping to Japan AFTER the warranty expires. I just believe that if you pay $2600 + for a target scope, it should have a lifetime warranty. Just my opinion.

Gman ,I agree with the warranty bit But, in perspective if you buy a $40,000 Pickup/SUV you only get 5-6 yrs. I guess we'll see in time what's worth what and how good they are.

Tell us some more about it....I have searched the web, including Kelbly's site....NO INFO anywhere.
How much adjustment in elevation? Windage? Weight?

I wonder what it is about scopes makes people think that a lifetime warranty should be required? I'm not dissing your opinion, but I have a $2000 Canon DSLR camera that does not have a lifetime warranty. I two $20K+ cars that don't have lifetime warranties. I have a $300K+ house that does not have a lifetime warranty (sure I have insurance). I have any number of high cost electronic, optical, mechanical, etc... items that do not have lifetime warranties. I think a lifetime warranty is great. I think that it adds value and if a manufacturer offers it, it's a compelling selling point. I don't think it should be required just because an item is expensive. Your point is taken about the longevity not being proven. I would be willing to bet that if you came across a defect after 5 years that could *truly* be attributed to manufacturing error, that they would work with you to resolve the issue, especially if they were at all concerned about their reputation. That's not a guarantee, just my opinion. I've run across plenty of examples where manufacturer's "do the right thing" in a case like that because they care about their product and they care about their reputation.

Anyhow, I just thought it was a little amazing that the warranty thing would be the deciding factor keeping people from buying an outstanding piece of glass. 5 years is a pretty long time. I wish Ford would give me 5 years on my truck.

I didn't say that it should be REQUIRED. If other scope manufacturers, have enough confidence in their product, and they offer a lifetime warranty, well, I guess that means that they ARE willing to stand behind their product. Like I said before, the March may very well be the best scope ever made. But, I will never pay that amount of money for a scope with a 5 year warranty to the original owner only. I am quite satisfied with my Nightforce's for the disciplin that I shoot.

Tell me if you sell your camera, etc the warranty passes to the new owner right?

Why the hell if you sell a March scope it loses the warranty?

If I have a problem with a Nightforce I ship it to Idaho, fixed for free. If I have a problem with a Sightron I ship it to North Carolina, fixed for free. Both those locations are in the USA.

If you have a problem with a March you get to ship it to Japan, nobody in the USA fixes them. If it's past five years, or you are the second owner you get to pay. I haven't even mentioned turn around time or time in customs etc. also what if it gets misplaced? Good Luck.

Reliability Nightforce verses March: Go to this link on Nightforces website.
http://www.nightforceoptics.com/nightforcescopes/SCOPES_OVERVIEW/5_5-22x50___5_5-22x56/5_5-22x50___5_5-22x56.html read the far righthand column. Now if March can equal that then it's reliability will be proven.

I'll stick with my Nightforces thank you!

I'm watching a March on ebay, a 10x-60x BR...he has it listed as if the warranty is still vaild, I emailed him through the ebay system about the warranty, he is saying the warranty is still good, both my question and another are at the bottom of the listing.

It's not Kelbly's as it's listed as being in FL.

Couldn't have been explained any better than the above comment.

This whole Warranty thing is full of beans. As stated elsewhere in this post people buy more expensive items Houses, Cars , Boats, Motorcycles, RIFLES, Appliances etc. all with LIMITED or NO Warranties. So what is so different about a SCOPE. Warranties are NICE, BUT the PRODUCT is what SELLS . If the product is SOUND it WILL SELL ,if not it WILL NOT SELL. Now if you like it or not YOU and I both PAY for those WARRANTIES thru higher PRICES. When I buy a product yes I want it to last and be REASONABLE to maintain. I for 1 would not buy a product without some firsthand knowledge of it thru freinds/family past experiance etc. As for March , well I don't know anyone that has 1 or have the CHING to buy 1 at this time so I'll let my Burris's, Leup's, Nikon's and Nightforces keep the bullets headed down range. On the FLIP side the WIFE didn't have a warranty either and she's been a TOP NOTCH product for 30+ yrs. and the factory :D that produced her is LONG out of buisness

i can't remember the year that Nightforce started the life time warranty? maybe 8 years ago?before that zip.and just to original owner....... but they still good.....jim

Hello Mike,
I would be leary of that March Scope auction on ebay. Something does not look right. I have never seen those stock photos before.
There is another March scope for sale on Ebay, here is the URL.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270518310541&fromMakeTrack=true
This scope is used.

Thanks again for the extra set of eyes,
