"March Madness"

No, it's not about basketball. I'd like to do a shout out to Jim O'Connell, match director exceptionale, Sacramento Valley Shooting Center, CA. Jim, I'd heard you were stepping down from those duties; and, it must be true. Because, I've not received an e-mail notice from you announcing the 2018 "March Madness" matches at SACV!?

Fifteen years ago, I would have already started my trip from Alabama for that first match in Coalingua, followed by a trek up the I-5 to Tierney's house to get ready for the full flavor of the March Madness matches. I've certainly thought of those days a lot over the past several years. Back then, not knowing what the weather would be, so bringing along a car full of clothes to contend with what could be up to "three zipper weather"! But...you know, Pelosi...sanctuary cities and now State...I just could not bring myself to step across that California line. (I even refuse to visit my daughter-in-law living in SF. Yet, it's a hard chore for me not to return to the wines of Sonoma, but I'm up to it.)

I wish you the best in your match director retirement. You certainly were the best one-man-show I've ever seen.

Good luck,

Dan Biggs

I too have fond memories of March Madness. Jim, all the best in your match director retirement! You did a wonderful job of running not just those matches but others, including the stat office for the 2013 FC World Championships.

This weekend is the California State Palma championship and Jim is the match director. Last weekend was Fullbore and Jim does an amazing job! But alas he gave up the Sacramento matches. Pete White is running the Sacramento part of March madness and he is handling the monthly matches as well. Pete is a great guy and we are lucky to have him step into that spot. We are lucky to have LR shooting 12 months a year here.

Danny, if you send me your email address, I can make sure it is added to the list. I can work with Pete to also get the CA matches more on these forums and public sites.

That being said, Day 1 of the CA State Palma Championships is completed.

I did not get the Sling scores, but I got the T/R and Open scores. Turnout was a bit light due to the threat of a rainy match. Fortunately, we saw no rain and the weather made for some interesting conditions.

I can tell you from the match's I've shot at Sac this year Pete is doing a fine job and Jim is shooting as well as ever and still flipping those excellent burgers for lunch.

Bryan,
As someone whose home range is Sacramento, It's interesting to see our weather referred to as,
"Interesting Conditions!"

Jerry Tierny used to say, "If you can shoot at Sacramento, you can shoot anywhere!"

Beware the lazy flags!
Turbulence in a lazy wind change/switch will give you unpredictable results.

Yeah...and he used to say that the most important "wind" flag on the range was the "red range flag" situated just off to the left and back of the 600 yard line! After a time, I started to accept that.

Yes...That BIG red flag was Jerry's favorite, and he didn't always share that info. Some individuals would ask and just get the big Tierney grin.
