Mans Best Friend

My daughter had to put her 14-year-old "westie/mastiff down last night. Poor guy was full of cancer. He was about 11" tall and weighed about 64lbs. Solid as a rock.
The strange thing is her friend had his brother and he had the same thing, put down last month.

Just put my Pearl Girl down on Monday. GSP, she was my love for sure. Very aggressive cancer in her mouth diagnosed in January. 12 years young, not a grey hair on her. We still have a 7 year old Male. This is the 3rd time letting go and it's not getting any easier, still pretty raw. They just don't live long enough.

Sorry for your loss. Been there. It makes a wreck out of me. Pure bred dogs just seem to have the genetics that too often seems to lead to cancers and chronic diseases. There`s a reason that as a general rule mutts live longer.

Funny how popular these "best friend" threads are around here. This one started four years ago, and has taken me through the end of my last best friend, and about three years into the life of my new one.

My new best friend, Millie is by all accounts a highly pedigreed bird dog. I guess I just don't hunt birds much any more, but I try to keep her satisfied. Our tally for starlings this year is prolly a few dozen. jd

All German Shepherds. Dominant is one on right, the oldest of them. One on fireplace is youngest, about 14 months old. All big babies for the most part, but with 3, they are intimidating to strangers. That's exactly what we wanted with them.
They are big for GSD's.
We have one for the same reason. He's more black and tan. Has a menacing bark, but sweet once he's introduced.

All of them are big. Even the youngest is over 100 lbs, and still growing. They are family to us and we live in a rural area, so we forget that strangers don't see them as the friendly girls we do. All they initially see are three big circling dogs with a lot of teeth.

As a friend of mine says "If you don't like guns and you don't dogs, I don't need to know you."
