Impact Puller

Old Navy

Met a friend in the gun section of Ace yesterday. We were talking about the primer shortage. He told me a story about his last loading session on his progressive press. (don't know the brand) He said he ran a few rounds and stopped to see if all was well. He found a round with a primer in sideways. He put it in his impact puller and the case ruptured when he gave it the first rap. He didn't get hurt but it made a mess out of the puller. Plastic went everywhere. The case blew out the side. Found the bullet a few feet away on the floor. Never heard of this before.

No, I think he told it just like it happen. Back in 68 my first re-loader was a Lee hand loader kit. You are going to have to use Google to find some photos. There was a mandrel to set a primer on. The case went down on the primer. You put a rod down into the case to to rest on the case head. You took a small nylon hammer and literally drove the case down to seat the primer. Never had a problem setting off standard primers but CCI mag primers would ignite about 1 in 10.

Yep...had several of those Lee loaders. But they used impact to seat a primer, not remove one. If he was using what we now call an impact puller, it would be more like a hammer with a hollow head. Nothing touches the primer. Really would be interested to know how that could happen.

Possible explanation...

The primer was distorted by going in side ways and possibly loosened the anvil and or compound

When the impact puller hit, the anvil struck the cup/compound.

Normally the anvil would be moved away from the cup if it moved at all.

Could be interesting if an upside down primer could be set off the same way

I never felt 100% comfortable when whacking those impact bullet pullers against my worktop, though I don't think I've heard of this happening on this forum. Anyone else hear of this type of thing? I love my press collet puller.

Stuffing a cartridge full of gunpowder into a hammer and banging it on the ground ... what could go wrong? (I use the RCBS collet bullet-puller.)
I used a RCBS impact puller for many years on loaded rounds with no issues but switched to the RCBS collet puller a couple years ago. The collet puller is definitely the best way to go.

I have also owned the Forster collet puller but the RCBS unit is much better quality and easier to use.

When your primer goes in sideways, the internals are crushed together, making it unstable.

The only problem with a sideways primer and a collet puller or grip and pull [ a.k.a pair of pliers ], is that it may not be possible to fit the base of the case into the shellholder, where it needs to be for either of those two to work properly.

Those methods are safer for loaded rounds when the base still fits into a shellholder.
