making a new bullet

what does it take to take a 7mm 100gr or 110gr or 120gr bullet and trim the heel off and lightening them up to 85gr? has anyone done this? is this do-able? or can I take a 270 bullet (6.8)and "bump" it up to 7mm ?? thoughts and Ideas!!!
 
Why ? - If you don't mind telling us ? - What "gain(s)" in particular are you looking to achieve by doing this ?
The 100 gr. Sierra is a good light-weight 7mm bullet (for Varmints & target shooting) - The 120 gr. Sierra does well on deer sized game.

IF you "just have to have it" - Then a custom bullet maker should be considered. - I'm sure there's someone in the "nitch" bullet making business that could provide you a 85 gr. 7mm bullet. - I don't have my bullet makers list from Corbin with me as I'm at work right now.

well all of the this effort is to get a bullet that will work in the Sako 7x33 which uses a 78gr speedhead bullet available only from Australia,, and I am tying to figure out how to get the from there to here but ATF is not playing ball,, so on another forum on guy just mentioned to trim the heel I suppose he ment to cut it off?,, and another one suggested "bumping up" a 6.8 cal bullet..
 
Can you just imagine what cutting off the end of a bullet does to the center of gravity and balance of the bullet.
 
Would the core just melt out like it does from the front when theyre overspun?
I wouldn't think so because some of the Nosler Partition bullets have an open base to the rear core. Havent used the good old Partitions in quite a few years but I assume not much has changed.

Of course Nosler may use a different core alloy in the rear to resist heat better...not sure on that.

Yes theyre still that way. Fmj bullets are too sometimes. I kill the hell out of animals with partitions from moose down to coyotes

Partition bullets have the partition to keep the bullet sealed and together, FMJ bullets have the complete jacket to hold everything together, a cup and core bullet with the bottom of the cup cut off has no viable seal and very little structural integrity.

I agree with the others that this is a bad idea for a whole lot of reasons. That said, I'd love to see someone try it and see what happens (not me, someone else ;)). My guess is that you'd wind up spending a lot of time making bullets that aren't very accurate, and that could very well come apart. Might get a little lead fouling along the way.
 
there is a fella in Australia who made a device to "bump up'' 6.8 cal to 7mm (.285) I just had a conversation with him and he said no to buying his design,, but he did make reference to a company there called Simplex,, anybody heard of them?

Both are bad ideas. Look into bullet making dies and tools. They are expensive though so probably not worth it.
where would on turn to to acquire bullet making tools? I figure it would be a expensive enough en devour but it may just have enough merit in the Idea... I personaly would keep to the 7mm and 6.5 mm and .375 bullets as that is what I have in my flock and I wont be getting rid of any in any time .... can someone start a "go fund me" thing? yeah I see that as a no starter as well
 
Here is the Quickload data with 100 gr Sierra HP.

Note the COAL is the standard 1.750"... Longer COAL relieves some pressure as long as the bullet is not in the lands, and shorter COAL reduces case capacity and increases pressure a little.
Went with 24" bbl, a MAX pressure of 38,000 psi (QL shows Maximum pressure for this cartridge at 40,611 psi). Also used 107% max case fill which is just starting to compress the powder and minimum of 80% case fill.
There were many more powders on this list but I ignored them because they were too slow burning, not generating much pressure and giving very slow velocities.
