making 6mm Rem. from 30-06,,,

thumbnail.jpeg thumbnail.jpeg thumbnail.jpeg thumbnail.jpeg thumbnail.jpeg thumbnail.jpeg I am forming some 6mm rem. from 30-06 brass ,,I have made a few and want to stop before I make a bunch of em wrong,,,I dont have a 6mm rem to try them in,,,I am wanting to surprise my buddy with these for his B-day in a few months for his 6mm rem.....if you have a 6mm rem (or .244) factory chamber and would like to try a couple of my creations please PM me,,,we can learn together how its done properly,,,I will send you a coupla brass and you can load and try them in your gun,,,I am unshure if the form/button die is set properly and once you would shoot them it will be discovered ,,,and I am wondering if the primer pockets will hold up ,,,maby we can figguer out a way make our own during this time of shortage,,,,,,,I am shure some of you have guessed that ultimately I want to make the cases out of Lapua !!,,,but am wanting to use the common stuff to get the die set right ,,the reason I am looking for a factory 700 is lots of the custom chambers are all over the place on dia at .200 and at the shoulder ,,,Roger
oops,,,I got trigger happy with the photos,,,just wanted to show the formed cases on the right in the photos,,,they are neck turned to .0145" ,,,

expiper, did you have a fired cartridge from your buddy's rifle to set the headspace for? That'd be the trick needed.
 
get a fired case. compare it to wilson case gauge fit. many questions asked and answered this way. my case gauges make me more crazy than the borescope!
case gauge is NOT the last word but an excellent fixed measure.
 
I have a 6mm Rem 700V model. I'd be glad to try a couple empty cases for you. I just recently came across a set of RCBS forming dies with reamer to make .250 Sav cases. I haven't started that learning curve yet so I'm interested in your results.
 
You should also check the neck thickness progressing from the case mouth to the shoulder and make sure it does not get thicker. You might not have the desired neck clearance depending on the brand of brass.
 
Roger, I could always just send you a hundred or 2 .257 robts. cases to neck down. It’s not as much fun but Pm me if that would help.

I have made the cases for my 6 rem AI out of 30-06, while it's doable, I will use 8x57 Lapua brass next time.


Best to turn down the necks before sizing down- when infirst tried this I found donut formation of I didn't neck turn.

good idea,,,where are you finding 7x57 and 8x57 Lapua brass????....thank YOU ,,Roger
 
For $ 5 you can get the Hornady Modified case for the OAL tool and it will have the same headspace as a go-gauge !

No, it is an intelligent question. Many guys like to do things the hard way. I never got it, but it's a fact. Just like many like to reinvent the wheel.If it makes them happy, I suppose it's ok.Although, sometimes I get dizzy shaking my head.

I've had a 6MM Remington for over 30 years. I've always shot and reloaded Remington brass and I've never had a problem. Once fired I neck size only and some of my brass has been fired over 15 times. I shoot lots of 50 until the necks get brittle and replace the entire lot with new. I bet I get more money back from recycling brass then I save annealing to extend life. I've never calculated but the time and cost of annealing probably isn't worth it.
 
Well David, some 50 or so years ago I had my first 722 12 twist .244. I shot it out hunting groundhogs and shooting matches. I replaced it with Douglass barrel and shot it out. I have long time 6mm experience. As you do, I only neck sized, since that was the way of the day. When necks started cracking or the bolt lift got too hard, I bought a new lot. Progress says the stiff bolt lift would be cured by proper full length resizing, and annealing would have made the cases good for many times the life of cases not annealed. If I had annealed since I was a teen I would have saved a lot of money spent on new cases and full length resizing would have helped. I come from where you are coming from but we were both wrong. Far better to anneal and full lengthy resize if you shoot a lot, in my opinion. I still don't understand making the cases out of other brass. But a lot of folks don't understand why I turned of the TV and quit watching the NFL and NBA. The beauty of the America we have lived in, that the Marxist Domcrats are destroying, is it has allowed us to do what works for each of us as long as we don't harm or infringe on others. Real shame to see so many wiiling to quietly watch it go away. I for one have little faith in the myth of, wait till they go out to the good old boys.The good old boys don't even speak up and people think they will fight and shed blood? I hope I am wrong but I doubt it.

I recently came across a fellow shooter that wanted to sell a set of RCBS dies for forming 250 Sav cases. The set included the inside neck reamer with pilot die. Now I can still buy .250 Sav cases pretty much anytime & I have plenty. Worst case, I could make them easily from .22-250 brass which is very, very easy to find. But I was always fascinated by the early reloaders that jumped through hoops making & converting brass. I guess I'm a nerd, but I still enjoy paging through George Nonte's book on case conversions. He details some radical stuff like soldering on neck extensions or swaging rims on rimless cases. I paid $30 for the RCBS die set on a lark just to experiment & get the satisfaction of making a few cases.

Another project I got interested in is swaging .22 rf cases into .224 bullets. The materials can be scrounged for free! Free supply of .224 bullets that shoot darn good, although the process is a little involved & labor intensive. The cost of my swaging project was about $800 to $900. I could have bought a lifetime of .224 match bullets for that. I'll add, I'm not a PD shooter so vast quantity of bullets was not even a priority. I learned a lot about swaging & satisfied another curiosity of mine.

Like I said, I guess I'm a reloading nerd but to each his own.
 
To each their own, however I'm 65 now, I ran my business full time (funny us old farts consider full time 50 to70 hour weeks) for over 30 years and still run my business 20 to 30 hours a week. A major shoulder surgery and a double knee replacement. The VA did me well and I function pretty good considering the mileage.

I take the time to reload because of constant quality of the ammo, early on I clocked factory ammo and was not impressed. I have a 358 Norma Magnum and I even buy brass for that. I just never had the time for extra steps with what I considered a small return.

I'm concerned about safety, having miss stamped brass around is not my way of doing things.
