6mm rem or 25-06 ?

Back in the 1970's, a lot of us figured the coyote was designed to have something to shoot with a 6mm Remington. It was the number one cartridge I chamber in coyote rifles. Back then, the bullet of choice was the Sierra 85 HPBT and a lot of the rifles were built with a 12 twist barrel. Later on, with the advent of the low drag 105 to 107 bullets, the 8 twist was chosen. I still worked with 85's too. Barrel life was around 1100 rounds before accuracy started falling off. Some guys went through a barrel every two years. One guy, whose motto was, "as long as there's lead in the air, there's a chance", kept shooting as long as the running coyote was visible. He went through a barrel every season. I still have a 6mm Rem which I built 40 years ago. I don't shoot it much anymore, but it'll still take care of a coyote. WH

I also notice the lack of interest @ my LGS for the 25 cal components. Same boxes of leads been sitting there forever. I dont get it. Probably because it doesn’t say creedmore on it. ( not knocking creed) you know what i mean.
That's because the 25 caliber is still not a "mainstream" caliber.

Yeah, there are heavier bullets available now.
But that is really more of a recent thing.

Add to that the early twist rates for the 87gr bullets they were designed around.
Then for years the "standard" twist rate for the 25 caliber was 1:10, which shot all the bullet weights available then, up to 120gr.

Hunting and match shooting helped the development of the 6mm bullets.

Even the 7x57 brass seems harder to find. Gunbroker is filled with affordable used long action bdl’s and adl’s. Ive been eye balling a few in the 600$ range.

Always have a 6rem in the stable. Currently its a M77 tang safety in light contour barrel. Dad shot a 6rem in F/open at club level until it started key holing and wouldn't stay on the backer at 1000.

I bug Peterson Cartridge every year about making X57 brass because nobody makes it and even if they did one run a year it would be a huge deal!

Always loved the 6mm REM. It was my first factory rifle that I traded a sporterized Mauser for back in the late 60’s or early 70’s. Still have it. Last year I sent a nice Mauser action to Douglas and had the fit a 26” stainless light varmint barrel. It’s a real shooter, much better than I can hold. So… I suggest the 6mm Remington. It’s a classic!

How about a blended approach.....257 Roberts Ackley Improved? Use the Norma +P brass. Should push the 90gr Absolute Hammer to about 3550 fps. My 25-06 got those 90gr AHs to about 3640. None of the deer I've shot with it have made it more than 25 yards from point of impact.

The 6mm Creedmoor seems to be what ya need. The 6mm Rem can be a bit long for a S/A and a bit short for a L/A. A lot better bullet choices in 6mm over 25. 6mm Creedmoor has just about the same powder capacity of a 6mm Rem due to a slight less taper of the case. Creedmoor brass is everywhere. Don't overlook the 6X47 Lapua.
Or a .25 Creedmoor. Sierra is making the CN SMK 131gr. Berger makes the 115gr Hunting VLD, a 133gr Elite Hunting Hybrid and a 135gr Long Range Hybrid Target. Just make sure you get a fast twist barrel. Run the Ballistics its pretty impressive

For a short range hunting rifle in 6mm I would build a 6 Dasher and shoot the 108 Berger Elite Hunter Hybrid or a 80-90gr MONO of some flavor.

Most accurate LR cartridge the past few years has been a 6 Dasher.

ISS
Most accurate LR cartridge isn't what the OP is asking about.

They are looking for a short range hunting cartridge.

@Jrjones,

What @1K6BRA says holds some water.
For some reason, the 25 caliber kills more cleanly than the caliber would dictate.
Add in fast velocities, flat trajectories, and they are hard to beat.

As I've mentioned to JEFFPPC, all my 257 Roberts is made from necked down 7X57 Mauser.
6mm Rem is just necked down a little more.
For good quality brass for that family, I use exclusively PPU brass.
It's actually really decent!

Ive never had the opportunity to explore the 6mm rem unfortunately. But maybe one day.
The 25-06 is a fantastic cartridge just as it comes out of the box.
Ive gone thru a few 25-06 barrels i could shoot it all afternoon and not beat the heck out of myself..and that bullet freak-n hits hard..woo-wee..
Nothing has a chance i can attest out to 200yrds.
I have no real world experience beyond 200 other then punching paper..but i can tell you between 200-300yrds the 25-06 shines and is absolute perfection in mathematics
I think the 25-06 cartridge holds alot of powder and would be better served with a 6.5 bullet.
For a better balance of bullet weight + powder charge to wring out efficiency and open up a new bullet selection. Put that in a tight neck chamber so you can turn and clean up case necks
And forgetaboutit.
If your reaching out beyond 200.
If your with in 200 your screwed because the world of 6mm cartridges will make your damn head spin..its rediculous how many 6mm cartridges are out there..you could pick a 6mm cartridge developed for 25yards out to 200 yards in 12" increment and not be wrong with what you have chosen..
If i was shooting with in 200 get a smaller cartridge 6mm rem may fit the bill.
Again tight neck to clean up cases
I was part of the magnum craze in the 90's and beat my self to death with 2- 300 rem ulta mags rifles.
you dont need to use a sledgehammer, to drive in a finish nail. And you dont use a tack hammer to break concrete.
Proper tool for the job.
thats my perspective hope its helpful
I would get a 6mm Rem..its a classy refined cartridge, for a civilized gentleman..
Haha

Thought about necking those 25-06 cases to 6mm?? Then you d have a 6-06 with easy brass formation and slightly better performance than a 240 Weatherby or 6-284 without expensive brass. About 200 fps more than the straight 6mm Rem !

( You could AI that also if you like the 40 degree neck and get another 75-100 fps that 6-06 in standard form will feed like butter in your long action and you ll have plenty of magazine for long heavy bullets) When my 240 burns out that’s what I m most likely going to do.

Not a bad idea for something your not gonna shoot that many rounds out of at a session. Hard to choose because both wld do the job. 25-06 brass is easier to get than any ”x57” brass right now it seams.

Its an expensive hobby when you love it, aint it boys? Maybe the best answer is to have one of each for the hell of it? Lol thanks for all the replies gents! I appreciate it. Hope everyone had a great hunting season. Trump 2024!

Keep it simple. Get a 308 for deer. All components available and a huge choice. Brass everywhere. I don't need the latest caliber or weird wildcat. Just a good accurate caliber that will get the job done. I don't need a room filled with 15 rifles.
