MagnetoSpeed vs Lab Radar

Still nothing definitive that I can find about LabRadar's ability to pick up small caliber, high velocity bullets. The LabRadar distributor told me it has not been tested over 3900fps; furthermore he tried it on his HMR and said it picked up "most of the shots" . Most of the shots is not acceptable. Based on that I bought a Sporter Magneto Speed for temporary use until I could find out if LabRadar will meet my needs (20 cal at 4000+ fps) but I have had such an excellent experience with the Sporter I don't think I am going to buy LabRadar. The Sporter model has picked up 100% of the shots I have run through it and has not influenced POI nor group size on my bull barrels. It takes mere seconds to set up and travels tiny.

I can set my labradar up in about a minute. I think it's faster than Magnetospeed. Because with it you have to check to make suse it's fastened snug and not going to get hit by bullet. And you have to be standing to attach it. Labradar you just aim at target and hit the on button, and arm button twice abs you are shooting.

Agree. My LR sets up much faster than my Magnetospeed.

LR will set up on a bench just as quick or quicker than MS.

If you are using a tripod for the LR, the MS will be much quicker to set up.

Frankly, setup time is an insignificant factor regardless of which one is faster.

If the MS fits your firearms, and if you are not concerned about POI shift, or if you are chronoing shotshell, or you are budget constrained, the MS is a better deal for you.

If you care about POI shift and want the freedom to chrono any firearm except shotshell (atm), the LR is for you.

These LR vs MS discussions always seem to turn into the XY chrono works (or is best) because I do load development (et al) THIS way . . . or THAT way. The fundamental differences between the units are clear, the price premium for the LR is clear . . . unless performance flaws are found IMO people will choose on those factors alone.

I agree I didnt buy an MS because of POI shift. I want to chrono most rounds I shoot from the bench. So I ordered an LR. Just wonder if it will work in other shooting positions and hope they increase the top end (4000fps) Now if the LR would have been 800 that would have caused me a little pause but the current price difference is insignificant in the scheme of what I spend on all the rest.
 
Any news on the sub-calibers? Waiting to hear if the LR will detect "fast" & "small" projectiles

IMO, the main reasons one would (and I did) purchase a LabRadar (LR) vs a MagnetoSpeed (MS) are

(1) MS's bayo changes the POI when attached to a barrel, and the amount of change will change as the point of attachment changes.

(2) LR may work with firearms you personally are interested in while MS may not. A shotgun user (eg) may find the reverse to be true ATM.

The main issue with a LR in operation is the potential for interference from other shooters. Other shooters do not affect the MS in any way.

[When the LR picks up a foreign shot report but doesn't pick up the projectile, it requires you to press a button to continue. When the LR picks up both (yes it did on a couple of occasions), you need to delete the shot either immediately (several button presses) or later (slightly easier). Adjustment of the sensitivity settings virtually eliminated that problem for me.]

So IMO what is worth some study is exactly how effective are the LR's sensitivity adjustments in eliminating interference from other shooters.

A secondary issue is LR's performance in (eg) rain as you suggest. It *should* work, but it *should* be tested.

Finally, AFAIK the only reason you enter the bullet weight into the LabRadar is for energy calculations. So in comparison to my V1 MagnetoSpeed, you could leave LabRadar's bullet weight at its default setting and get the same performance.

At the range (Lincoln, CA) last week and David Hoing was there. David is a Long Range shooting instructor. He had a new LabRadar....we could not get it to pick up 17HMR bullets. It was his first day out with the chrono though. I am going to arrange another session with him to try my 20P and 20VT...will let everyone know.

My LR records my 17HMR. Could be an aiming problem.
 
I was going to invest in the lab radar but after making a mount for my magneto speed to my bipod and have had no poi shift with it on compared to off It fills my needs as I can do my load development with it on.
We used it on 3 rifles today with great sucsess.

I've always said if they made mounts off the stock, they would have a more marketable product.
Would like to see yours... (hint pictures) ... lol

I used David's Labradar again yesterday with the Magnetospeed as well the Labradar worked well on 40 grain 20 cal bullets going 3800 fps but did not pick up any 32 grainers running between 4050 at 4100 fps
 
I don't want to rain on anybodies parade, but I have yet to see anyone publish tests of the labradar operating in a combination hot and humid environment. This device operates in the K band, very close to a water absorption peak. Temperature is critical because the air on a hot summer day can store a lot more water than a spring, fall, or winter day.
 
The MS app is really not useful in its current form. You have to disconnect the MS from the bayonet and connect to the phone, sync the device and get the latest shot string only, then email it. Cannot get archived data or save it. It also uses an audio signal to communicate like an old modem.
