So….if I understand you, it barely engraves?I don’t know the length of the chamber but a live round (Lapua) only has 0.075-0.080 stick out as it just touches the leade

Yes, and even if the chamber is perfectly centered it is still possible to misalign the bullet as it is inserted. This is why the bolt face has to be centered and square with the bore. It is more reliable to seat the bullet in the chamber using the bolt face to seat it than it is to pushing it in with your finger. So the most important thing is the chamber concentricity to the bore?
Regardless of how much or how little engraving is

The 52D may not be the most popular chamber in use today, but it's no longer considered to be a match chamber? Not a match chamber by current standards.
Tim, if with a 0.075 stick out it should engrave about 0.030 on the first band. FYI, I have never seen any distinct engraving except with one barrel which has a slightly smaller bore that one gave me about half the first band engraving. shot really good but was finicky on what lots it shot. after going a little deeper on the chamber length, it now is much better. I won my first ARA with that barrel in some pretty bad wind. 1253 agg.So….if I understand you, it barely engraves?
Thanks, Tony, for the clarification. I don't push the round to seat it but just to get it in the entrance so to speak and use the bolt to seat it fully. sometimes when chasing the conditions and I know not ideal to do I get bitten many times. I just drop it on the loading tray.Yes, and even if the chamber is perfectly centered it is still possible to misalign the bullet as it is inserted. Chamber length or depth isn’t an absolute number. It varies depending on the ammo. And ammo varies from round to round and lot to lot and manufacturer to manufacturer.
When I cut a chamber I use the ammo I expect to shoot then take an average of at least 20 rounds to determine my depth. Of course you can’t always do that because the ammo will run out then you are stuck with whatever you can find. But when possible I find it helps or maybe it just lets me feel good.
