Looking for info on rimfire actions.

I`ve been looking for a left/left..Trying to get PTG to make one..Talked to Stiller but no good..I want to do a pistol with one.

The OP should just buy a REMINGTON 40X complete rifle, barreled action or just an action and start from there. Quick, I'll list mine in the classifieds !! hahahha

If you want remington how bout the 541 models? I see the S and T models on the line. Never seen a 40x at a silhouette match. That loading ramp would slow me down. I have one in a br stock and its sketchy on a bench

I have a 540-XR that is the best 22 I have ever shot.I sold my Annie (only a 64 ) because this was better. The barrel was shortened and recrowned to get the balance the way I like it.With its Canjar set trigger,I reached my personal best,38,but now I'm too old and losing it to cancer so it will be sold as soon as I can figure fair market value.

Are you missing the spring loaded filler piece that goes in the LH receiver raceway ?

I have trained myself to set the cartridge on the loading ramp and slide it in the chamber with my thumb. Slightly slower but I have better results not trying to shoot real fast with a RF. I developed this habit from when I had non-drop port CF BR rifles. Load the next cartridge directly into the chamber and remove the fired case as the hand leaves the action. Getting used to RFs with their ejection of the fired case led me to buying drop ports for my CFs.

I used a 40X rimfire successfully for Rifle Silhouette for many years. Shooting left handed with a right handed action allows me to see what is going on with loading and extracting/ejecting. This is a practice I will continue.

I like 40X's. I am a fan of 40X's. When they were introduced they were stupendous. A significant step up from what was otherwise commercially available. The 40X centerfire actions dominated benchrest for many years but it is unlikely that you will find one on the line today. Even so, if I ran across a 40X rimfire at a reasonable price I would be hard pressed to turn it down. That is not likely though as the 40X, like the 270 Win and Colt AR's enjoy a reputation (and price) that exceeds their performance relative to other options.

There are numerous characteristics of the 40X design that have been eclipsed by new designs such as the Turbo, Copperhead, 2500X and others. Just like the muscle cars of the 60's that are heavy, handle sluggshly, have a hp to displacement ratio that is eclipsed by even boxy commuter cars of today, time has passed the 40X by.

The aforementioned loading ramp in the 40X and the gap on the far side is one of the several reasons I am looking at other actions like the Copperhead and 2500X. The extractor is a bit weak too.

A PTG 40X clone or Lonestar would have the same inherent characteristics but at least would be dimensionally accurate as to face squareness, alignment of the threads to the center axis of the receiver, bolt raceways and lapping of the lugs. A 40X would not be as accurate unless it has been trued and so on by a gunsmith. The 40X centerfire actions I have had required quite a bit of work. Probably the nail in the coffin there.

The bolt would be the same (at least for a new 40X) as PTG makes the bolt for Remington.

I shoot competition RF and have 3 Copperheads and a 2500X. The Copperhead is my 1st choice. The primary reason is it is a smoother action. It also has a dual strike FP or you can change it to a 6 or 12 o'clock FP. It kind of gets down to Ford vs Chevy....preference. If you go to most any RF shoot and you can likely shoot both. Jerry Stiller owns the RF action market and he is always available in the unlikely case you have an issue. Like CF, it is hard to see any difference at the target with either Stiller action.

Great info Ben, thank you.

I talked to Jerry at the SHOT show. Very nice, very helpful, very knowledgeable.

If I could simply wish up a rifle it would be based on a Copperhead. For reasons you cited and because it has the same length, diameter and bolt spacing as a Rem 700/40X.

Unfortunately the Copperhead is not currently in production and the NOS ones I can find have a left port. I am looking for right/right. If I can't find one I may be forced to consider alternatives. It would be difficult to choose between the fundamental precision and refinement of the 2500X, a 40X clone such as the Lonestar (not in production either) or PTG clone or a Remington 40X.
