Budget benchrest actions?

For the $1300 budget, Kauger is the one for sure. But Bat is Bat for a reason. Either can win on the given day thats for sure. And I do have customers that have their own preferences from a shooters point of view. Some prefer one or the other.

With Kauger it comes down to the br2 or br3. I like the xp cut with thick back tang in the br3, but do wish it still had a front recoil lug. The br2 is just a rem clone. You see any reason to go one way vs the other?

Has anyone tried the Viking series or others from PTG? Between $800-$900.

Ime, if you buy anything with price being the primary reason, there is a reason why, which leads to spending money twice, when biting the bullet typically ends with you being happy with you purchase and money ahead, in the long run.
There are other good actions but a safe bet is to buy a Borden, Bat or Kelbly action specically for the disciple you plan to use it for. Those three are top shelf and you may never see a NEED to buy a different action for br work. Wants are a different story.

Just out of curiosity sake I see the bighorn origin isn’t mentioned on this thread, why is that ? I seen numerous times on here they are near the top for recommended budget actions

Is there any reason a front recoil lug can't be added? Most things, just turn the bbl shoulder forward by the amount of lug thickness and sandwich in place just like a Remington. Pinned is nice but not an absolute.

I mean bolt clearance. Most BR actions have .002 or less such as the Panda. While the Atlas has .005. I'm told that the this could contribute to vertical stringing. Would I know? Probably not, but buy once cry once is what I'm hearing here.


Edit: just wondering what Kauger BR actions had.

Iam pretty sure the atlas has a little smaller clearance than .005 now the tactical atlas has more clearance. That's what Ian at kelblys told me. That's was when the atlas first came out. May have changed. But the 3 I have are tight.
