A local guy that just shot locally won the factory nationals a few years back.....I imagine it would be tough in unlimited to do that as well. Those who perform at a high level are almost always the product of a high performance system. You will not see an ARA rookie from a backwater club win the Nationals in St Louis but you will see that the top finishers there have all been competing against the best of the best.
Shooting matches at different ranges and often would be my best advice. Of course this is the use of flags every time you are shooting. Practice, lot testing, matches, ect. If your shooting, use your flags. Our home range, I would rank at a medium level of difficulty. The unknown of other ranges helps with a persons ability to adapt quickly.Earnhardt- How is this best done?
Commitment before equipment.
If nothing else, go to St. Louis for one day so that you can see what equipment everyone is using and also talk to some of the best Factory shooters around. Most all will freely discuss what they have, why, and how they approach bench setup and shooting a card.Go to St Louis. One way to get rich is to hang out with rich people.
