Looking for Camp Perry info

I have never been to Camp Perry before and think I will give it a go next year. I want to shoot the high power matches but I have no clue as to which matches are what and what the course of fire is for each. I will be shooting an NRA Match rifle in .223 and would like to enter as many possibilities as I can with it, at least out to 600 yards. Is there anywhere that lists course of fire for each of the matches, I couldn't find anything.

Thanks

If you are shooting a Match Rifle(as opposed to a Service Rifle) you will most likely want to shoot during "NRA Week" which falls on August 6-10 this year. Monday is a 50-shot match for 4-person teams. Tuesday through Friday is the individual championship and it is 240 shots for the week + sighters. Basically 3 complete 80-shot OTC matches broken up over 4 days. Each day you will shoot 3 of the 4 stages of a regular HP match - for instance, I believe on the first day you fire 20 shots at 200 Off Hand, 20 shots at 200 Rapid Sitting, and 20 shots at 300 Rapid Prone. It goes pretty smoothly and shooting is usually done for the day around 3pm. Much less grueling than during CMP week. Big awards ceremony on friday night. Long range matches start right away Saturday morning if you are into that sort of thing and can spend that much time there.

If you are on a budget, you can stay right on post at Camp Perry for cheap and eat in the mess hall for $5-$6 a meal. It's great fun, and I highly recommend it. Shoot me an e-mail if you have any particular questions and I'll try to answer them for you.

Good luck,
Erik

Erik is right on the money. If you are shooting a match rifle you will want to shoot the second week which starts off with a 4 man team match then 4 days of shooting 60 shots per day making up the 240 shot 2400 point National Championship. The third week is long range which can be done with a .223 but you would be behind the power curve. Go to www.nrahq.org and you will see the exact schedule and what to expect. I believe you will be able to enter come April and you can sign up to be on the mailing list to get a packet when they are available. The national matches at perry are very fun and I highly recommend it! Good luck!

And on Sunday (day before the 4-man team match) there's a 2-man team match (500 agg with sighters), too.

I would love to do the team stuff as well, but being new to the sport I dont know anybody. I think I read somewhere that you need to be from the same or an adjoining state to be on the same team, other than one of the matches where they are all comprized of high masters from anywhere.

One of the bits of information I was looking for was which matches are NRA rules, where you start from position rather than starting from standing and quickly sitting or laying down. If there are any of these. I know you can do this in any of them but then you are uneligible for any awards if you were to qualify for one. And I wouldn't want that to happen if I had a good enough day.

Your for sure, are going to want to look into the NRA National High Power championships and not the CMP Service Rilfe championships, if your going to want to shoot a Space Gun ( Match rifle) ( AR15 Match rifle) At the Service Rifle CMP National Championships your rifle is not allowed as per there rule book.
At the NRA National HighPower Championships all the Rules are NRA rules. Dont get confused with the CMP week in fact maybe dont even look at that stuff so as not to confuse the issue as of right now. ( I know how to get confused easy)
Aug. 6th to the 10th are all the NRA matches for High Power. Just as you described you will be starting from position with two sighters at these matches Per the NRA rules.
I attached a three links below. I suggest you take a look at each one. The first one is just the dates for the championship, not abig deal. The second one is the results from Last year to give you an idea of what matches are shot, and the third the most important. Its the link to the NRA highpower rule book. Its very important to look it over, I find most new shooters do not do this until they reach about Expert or Master class for some reason ( Myself included) relying on the High Masters at the club to tell them what the rules are.
At the bottom of the first link is the information for housing at Camp Perry. Take a peek there also.

There must be a club somewhere near you that you have shot at, I would think someone has gone to Camp perry from there? I know its a heck of a drive so alot of PNW's dont make it. Anette Wachter lives in Seattle and goes most years. At the next few matches you attend I would ask around a little.
Very best of luck.

PS while your looking at the Results note Nate G's high Placing in the Match Rifle Championships in th eHigh Master class. Way to go Nate.

A certain Theurer didn't do too shabby, either...

Would have been nice if I had remembered how to shoot offhand that week... :'(

Started off the season at my local club this past weekend firing a 98,99,100,99,100 for a 496 23X. Though this is on a 100 yard range at reduced targets so wind isn't much of a factor.
Now I just need to find a range that will let me sight in for 600 yards so I can figure out what I need to do to dial in the proper corrections before I fire the first sighting shot at a match. With only two sighting possibilities I want to be previously prepared before I go into a full length match just having to figure out cross winds.

Great shooting Caster.

Nice standing score, that is the one that gets most until they learn how to do it. If you do about 20 push ups in one minute before youshoot that may replicate some of the excitment of being and shooting at camp Perry with hundreds of outher shooters. Ha

I have to ask. Do you use a reduced load for your 100 yard matches or even the smaller bullets like the 50gr class? Or are you using the full house 77gr for the rapids and 80's for the slow prone ( 600)?

Again damn nice shooting, looks like your position and technique are dialed in.

Thanks, so far I have just been using factory match 77gr for everything. I have finally generated enough brass where I will start reloading for my practice ammunition but will probably just keep using what I have been for matches. I just wait and buy in bulk when I see a good sale price.

Sounds like the 77gr Factory Match ammo is doing just fine. It will do just as good at 600 yards as well. Your good to go.

Very best of luck.

You should go to as many Registered NRA matches as you can. Do you have a classification card? Plan on shooting your state high power match. Good luck

My classification card came in the mail last weekend so I'm set there. I plan on shooting in my states high power championship coming the first weekend in June, I'm looking forward to that. I have very few matches under my belt at this time with only four official and two practices. I'm not new to shooting, just new to high power, starting last summer. I want to do a few more matches before Camp Perry to try and find some others that may want to form a Washington team.

How long do the entry packets usually take to arrive? I sent off for one both by e-mail and snail mail 3 weeks ago. Just wondering if I should hit them up again or keep waiting.

I don't think the NRA sent the packets out yet. I always sign up by mail because its a good way to get rid of NRA points. They send me the packet automaticaly every year, havent got this year's packet yet.

Thanks Ken,
I'll keep waiting a while longer.

Okay, just booked one of the 4 person huts. The lady I talked to on the phone said the accomodations are 1 step below being in a tent. Are they really that bad? not sure what to expect, have any of you stayed in one of these and are they really that bad?

Now if I could just get the entry information and program. the Shooting Sports USA monthly paper shows they are available, but I have gotten no response by phone, e-mail, or snail mail. Hopefully the dates I booked will give me a place to stay for the team events if I can even get on one.

The next thing I need to figure out is fly or drive. Flying get me there in half a day, but then I am captive and still need to get from the airport to Perry and back with all my crap. Driving will take 32 hours according to Mapquest, but I drive a company vehicle so gas is free but 32 hours ugggh. Maybe I can find another Washingtonian going that would want to share driving time and we could knock it out in 2 days. I dunno, food for thought.
