Looking for a +1000yd rifle/calibre

I am new here, so HELLO! I recently got into tactical rifle(distance) competitions and I currently use a bolt (Savage) .308. Although I am a big fan of it, I want to move up to a lighter/faster rd for +1000yds.

I've been looking at the 6.5 Creedmoor, but I am not sure how this round is being recieved and if it'll stick around long enough for me to purchase a rifle chambered in it. Should I consider another calibre? Although reloading is not an option for me at the moment, it will be within this year.

I am also tossing around the gas v. bolt question. Although supreme accuracy is not my ultimate goal, I do want a .5moa rifle. I hear the Noveske N6 20" 6.5C is capable of that?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Many rifles at the 1,000 yard competitions are chambered for the 6.5-284. What the heck is a Novetske N6???

I prefer a 7mm-08 ( .284 cal) rifle barrels with 1 in 9" twist.
Bullets 162 gr to 168 gr ( Hornady Amax and Sierra Game King)
Target Barrel Sendero Taper 24" length

3 uses :1,000 Long range Steel , 300 yd bench rest and 500 yd hunting

What is is that you want to use the rifle " ultimately " for is how you chose the frame from Assualt vs Bolt action.

After 5 years in the US Army and 2 years round robin combat I will not own a semi automatic

Just a few of the calibers that have won the Long Range competition at Camp Perry:
6XC w/ 105 - 115 gr. bullets
.243 same bullets (barrel burner)
.260 Rem. w/ 130 -140 gr. bullets
6.5/284 w/ same bullets (barrel burner)
every magnum from .264 to .30 (barrel burners deluxe)
It is all how much you practice, how long you would like your barrel to last, how much recoil you can deal with for a hundred rounds a day prone
The 6BR is a good choice as well. They shoot very well and don't kick much.
Long barrels (30"+), bullet B.C. in the .450s or above at velocities around 2950 (unless you have heavier 7mm or .308s).

My focus is primarily tactical competitions. Does this change the recommendations listed above?
1/8 twist 243 with 105 to 115 grain bullets. easy to load for, feeds extremely well from a box mag, Lapua brass is easy to find, recoil is not an issue, reloading dies are no problem and everyone and their brother makes great 6mm bullets.

+1 for the .243 winchester and if you want to ramp up later you can ackley improve the cartridge and dies are easy to come by for the ackley as well.

You would want something in a short action and mag fed for tactical match, I suspect. I'm looking at .243, .243AI, or 6mmSLR for my next project. When I can afford it is another topic all together. ;D

Or maybe something like 6.5X47L or 6X47L.

for tactical matches.... I agree you want something that feeds from a magazine, and will shoot as flat as you can get, but with recoil that you can tolerate. If you know you will likely not shoot in an NRA target match very often, then step up to the big time and get 7WSM or other short magnum. My AI SA magazine fed 7WSM shoots the berger 180s at 2,800 fps+ from a 26" barrel, and gives nominal recoil from a muzzle break. I take the break off, shoot it single shot, and compete in F-Class matches also.

I know some have gone over the top in tactical matches now, and shoot the 338 NormaMagnum or the necked down version in 30 cal, the 300 norma magnum. Lets just say they don't have too many wind issues with anything inside of 1,000 yards.

Re: Looking for a +1000yd rifle/caliber

If you are wanting to play the "tactical" game or shoot F-Class TR, I would get a 308 Win. There is tons of information out about the ballistics and the 175 gr. Sierra MatchKing shoots well out to 1000 yards. Don't waste your time with the 168 gr Sierra's at that distance as they do not work - I know as I have tried.

The 308's will shoot well over 3000 rounds before the barrels need replacing. The 6.5x284, 243 Win, and a lot of the Ackley Improved and Magnums will be toast around 1000 rounds.

If you are wanting to learn wind and shooting at longer ranges I suggest shooting F-Class NRA matches. You will get a lot more shooting, learn the wind, your self, your gun/ammo, and not have to dress up like a ninja warrior and run around playing games - just my opinion.

6.5 x 284 is a barrel burner. look at the 260 rem or 6.5 x 47. 6BRX would be my choice, but would not feed well.

I have a .308, of which, I really like. I know it's got enough juice for 1000yds, but I'd like to shoot a cartridge w/ a better BC. Right now, I am leaning towards the 6.5C or the .260. Plus I hear Lapua is starting to make .260 brass.

Considering those two: Will they be easy on barrel life? Provide good savings on reloading?

You've already gotten lots of feedback and based on your responses, I think the 260REM would be your best choice. If you want something a little more exotic: 6.5x47L.

you might even consider the 6.5mm-SLR or 6mm-SLR I think they might give you some better barrel life to the parent cartridges due to the longer neck and sharper shoulder angle. the 6.5x 284 and straight 243 are hard on barrels. the 284 would be an option for tactical rifles but you would need a long action as you also would for a 6.5x284. good luck in your endevours, Darrell
