Calibre Recommendation

Having looked at what's available to me I'm now thinking a tikka varmint in 6.5x55 swede. Don't know what everyone's opinion on that is.

Also using factory ammo in a factory barrel how much life do you think I'll get. Compared to a .243 say.

The 6.5×55 cartridge would be a really good choice. Its case has between 6 to 7% more capacity than the .260 Rem. RWS and Lapua make 6.5×55 brass as well. It would serve you very well in the Tikka Varmint with a fast twist barrel.

So many ammo options :-\

Is there a good article or video someone can point me to that helps decipher the different calibers and what's good for what?

I went thru the same thought process that you are going thru a few years ago for 1000 yard NRA conventional prone (aka sling) competition and chose the 260 Remington and have been pleased with the choice. It is no longer a wildcat but has been standardized and reloading equipment and components are available. The 142 SMK with H4350 is the gold standard for 1000 yard shooting. There are other good choices but accuracy, recoil and component availability are all positive for this cartridge. If you are a high master and shooting F Class you can probably squeeze out a point or two with other choices. A point or two is significant at that performance level but the cost of improvement at that level is high. I have no experience beyond 1000 yards so I will leave that part of your question to others that do.
