Look What My Gunsmith Gave Me Today!

Over the years I have helped my 78 year old gunsmith sell various guns and gun related items on-line.

Today, as I was pouring over some of his guns, I picked up this Savage Model 1914 .22 Pump, telling him that I always wanted one growing up as a kid in the 70's.

His response, "keep it.....you deserve it!.."

Pretty freaking cool, he was thinking it was made in 1924. Also, we talked about the technology back then!
Finally, he said the rear sight alone was probably worth a lot...

Anyways I'm pretty stoked.....btw, he said to keep it unrestored.

As a kid I use to spend a lot of time visiting an old gun smith in town. My parents had a small grocery store down from his shop
where he use to shop. It was amazing to watch him work and to help around his shop cleaning, probably mostly asking too many questions. I am sure I was in his way more than anything, but I really enjoyed being around him and he didn't seem to mind.
I remember those times very well.

How cool is that? He wouldn't just happen to have a Martini laying around that needs a new home does he?
And for that, I'd be willing to pay good $$.

Got a shooting buddy with a few medical issues. Hour and 1/2 drive to the range from his home. (we now meet half way for coffee. No shooting but lots of BS time)
He had a hard time setting up his gear and walking down to set up targets.
He shows up, I unload his truck and set him up at the bench. Set up his targets and load his gear back up when we're done.
On the next range trip, as I'am unloading his gear, he throws a soft case and a hard case in the back of my truck. He says "we'll talk about it later".
I get home and unload. It turns out to be a 1968 Colt AR with another upper in the soft case. His reasoning? I'll probably outlive him so I should have it to shoot.
Rather keep HIM around for a looong time. I can always buy another AR.

Those are great, largely underrated .22’s. It is derived from the 1903 Savage, primary difference being a box magazine. I have a nice ‘03 mostly because I grew up about 1 mile from where they were made. Factory got converted to Browning 30 cal machine guns during WWII and never recovered,being only 10-12 miles from Remington Arms, became Chicago Pneumatic.

There is something about old rifles with octagon barrels and your story is a great example of a fond memory.
