A great example of a Sportsman

We have read some bad stuff about folks behavior this season, I thought I'd add something I feel is commendable.
I have a customer and friend that hunts a lease near my shop. He and his wife are super choosy about what they harvest. The other day he was running late to get in his stand so he pulled his truck into the field to watch his food plot as opposed to walking in. ( Legal here as long as you are off the right of way of the road ). There were several deer in the field and as he scanned them carefully noticed a bit of orange up high. He instantly realized someone was in his stand. He walked the winding route so as not to spook deer and arrived under his stand.
He immediately asked the guy what the hell was he doing, the guy removed his facemask and my friend realized it was a kid, maybe 15 years old. The kid said he that he and his dad were hunting the XXX property and his dad was in the stand way over there.
My friend has had trouble with this neighboring landowner before but decided to take the high road. He explained to the kid that he was 100 yards off that property and that this was his stand. The kid made to start to leave the stand when my friend said " Tell you what, you just keep on and watch that corner, I'll go back and watch the other side from my truck. Kill whatever you want but don't come back in here hunting OK?" He turned and made it back to his truck. 45 minutes later he heard two shots. He thought to himself - that kid probably killed the biggest buck around. Since it was near dark, he drove his truck down to find the father with the son.
The father apologized for his son invading my buddy's stand. Friend said -" Ah, no big deal, I just came down to see if you needed help finding your deer." Father said it was him that shot (these hills play tricks with sound ) and he had missed a big doe standing in the wide open at about 60 yards.
My buddy confirmed no hair or blood, shook hands with both and left.
I thought this act was mighty gracious considering deer hunting leases and property conflicts can get pretty ugly.
Enjoy your Sunday!

In today's world of territorial ground standing on state land, we need some sort of pay it forward to guys that are sincerely trespassing unknowingly. I cross over accidentally on my neighbors just because we don't post signs and theres are so far apart it's hard to tell exactly where lines are. I don't cross multiple yards but feet sometimes onto the property. They as well as I am ok with it. Putting stands and still hunting another's property is a different story. I hunt public land in Northern Michigan and guys literally think they own the 40 acre perimeter around where they hunt. They threaten and try to intimidate hunters. It's stupid. Most if not all are locals. It obviously doesn't work on all hunters but they try until it won't work then move on. In some cases threats have been made. When a hunter threatens another hunter while toting weapon, it's no joke. Just refreshing to read that story above and see that hunters should respect hunters. We're all in it together. Some hunters do make it bad for the honest ones but it's usually the acception to the rule.

Unfortunately a lease is what many folks in the eastern half of the country depend on for a place to hunt. It would be really great if we were all blessed with the abundance of open land found in the west. If I had known as a young man what I know now I would be there now.

Sigh...me too, me too. Unfortunately my wife doesn’t want to be any further away than 10 mins from her parents. My only way out west is through bucket list hunts.

@rebel , thats a great story. Thank you for sharing. A little bit of kindness goes a long way. Hopefully, the good experience the kid had will teach him about trespassing and will also encourage him to keep hunting since good people are out there.

I guess I live in a place that you can't hunt all the land that is available no matter how long you have. I was antelope hunting in the northeast corner of Montana and was on a piece of BLM that was 326,000 acres. There are countless thousands of acres of state and federal land and many many thousands of acres of private land that is enrolled in Block Management where land owners allow the public access to their land.

We don't have large plots of land to hunt around here unless you are a Biltmore.. Hard for you boys out west to wrap you head around I'm sure... I hunt right up against city limits and a golf course.. I obey all laws and thank God our DNR has a brain about hunting rules and regulations.. I guess that why this area is one of the most desirable places to live ( according to the marketing company that got $$$ for the survey) oh, and there's thousand of people moving in each month.. Less land for deer..

We have fenceline hunters, had to go absolutely no recovery of wounded deer that enter the property. One individual threaten to get the "state police", I said "I'll wait, they can't go in either".

When I was a kid everybody didnt hunt deer. Nobody leased their ground. You could drive up to a house and get permission to walk a small timber or draw now everything is leased or owned by hunters. If you dont own or lease you hunt on public ground. Timber is fading fast every year. High grain prices got them trackhoes and dozers running all winter. You did that kid a big favor. Doug
