Same here....My 20 year old son has the record of 880 yards....He was shooting my Savage 6mm XC with Berger 105 VLD Hunting bullet. Of course I was able to zero him on the shot so I think the spotter deserved some credit! My son has our groups record at 719 with a 6.5/284 The rest of us are pretty excited at 3-400. Old eyes aren’t what they used to be.
Gotta walk out to the mound and range back to the truck or bench......the laser works fine.785 yards verified by walking out to the body during a barrel cooling session and marking it with GPS. Then sitting at the bench and marking that.
Lasers are useless where we hunt in North Dakota. Too many "rolling" terrains to get an accurate lock and return on. You can get +/- 40 yard variations trying to laser the same target multiple times.
I knew that this one was a fair distance so I wanted as accurate as possible.
And yes.....I had 2 witnesses...LOL
Custom built 223
Urbanrifleman 26" barrel
NightForce NXS 55-22x56 scope
Berger 80.5gr Hybrid
2825 fps
In one ear and out the other.
NOTE: Berger target bullets DO NOT EXPAND...LOL
Neat hole going in and a neat hole with blood coming out.
They are however DAMN ACCURATE
I had been shooting prairie dogs for almost 20 years and my longest shot was about 400 yards when I hit an unlucky dog at 665 yards. It was May,04 I had put a 6.5-20x40 Leopold with mildot on my Ruger No. 3 .219 Wasp and was shooting dogs in S.D. I was laying on a pond dam shooting a valley about 350 yards wide when I spotted a adult dog on a large bare spot on the hill on the far side of the valley. I thought this would be a good time to play with the mildots in the scope. I didn't have any ballistic charts at the time and had just held high on anything beyond my 200 yard zero. First shot was about 50 feet short but walked it in till I connected with the 55 gr V-Max on about the tenth shot. Fast forward to May,09 first time out with my Ruger No. 1 .204 Wasp. Shooting 40gr V-Max at 4040 fps hit two at 634 yards, was up 8.5 on the scope from my 200 yd zero. After Hornady came out with the 75 and 80 gr A-max I decided to try for a 1000 yd shot. I had a Ruger No.3 rebarreled with a Shilen 7HV barrel with 8" twist. June,2012 Southeast of Zortman, Montana had a hit at 709 yards with 75gr A-Max. June, 2013 same area I had my longest hit at 915 yards. Cartridge is a wildcat of mine 30-30 case,1.900 case length, 35degree shoulder, load is 34.0gr H4350, 210M, 75gr A-Max, 3200 fps. I was up 23.0 inches on the scope from 200 yd zero. I was alternating shots with my shooting partner and connected on the fifth or sixth shot. Had shots at one over 1000 but didn't get a hit so fell short of my goal. Unfortunately that was the last time I was able to make the trip out west to shoot PD's. That 75gr A-Max does work extremely well on the coyotes here in Indiana. First pic is May 09 634 yd hit with Ruger No.1 .204 Wasp. Second pic is Ruger No.3 on the prairie June12 the day before 709 yd hit.Hey everybody I was just wondering if some of you guys would love to share some of y'all's longest varmint shots here are a few of mine that I have
Did that and the laser did work fine but since I had to hike out there, I figured I might as well get the GPS mark.Gotta walk out to the mound and range back to the truck or bench......the laser works fine.
LOL.Just got back from SD. Previously in WY I think my longest PD kill was around 600yds with a 243AI. On this trip I made a 630yd shot with a 223AI. Subsequently I made a 670yd shot with a 6.5-06AI. Kind of overkill for that range, but we had challenging crosswinds, 12-18+mph. I moved out to one at 770yds, I got the range dialed in and burned 10 rounds splashing dirt on him from inches left and right without getting lucky before he went down the hole and stayed there.
