I cant keep from thinking about building a long range heavy/unlimited type rifle. I am not quite ready to start a project like this just yet, but i am gathering ideas and thoughts. Pictures are worth 1000 words! so if some of you fellas that have big heavy unlimited type rifles would care to show them, i would love to see them. Tell us about them as well. I am thinking something along the lines of a 284 Shehane or some type of Improved case design. Anyway lets see what you have. Lee

Is that a tension tubed rifle? Looks pretty darn slick. Nice group by the way!!! Tell me more sir. Lee

thats a slick rig as well. Must be nice living in the wild, wide open air. Lee

A little more conventional and off the shelf.

Keeps a 3/8 inch group at 200 yards.

Not sure how heavy to be a long range heavy gun is but this one weighs in at about 18 lbs.

On edit: I fixed the issue with unregistered guest being unable to view the pictures. Sorry about that. If anyone looked at the link and had problems viewing the pictures, let me know.

Hi Lee , I started this a long way from the center of 1K benchrest coming from Australia .. Basically went in an evolution process building our own stuff along the lines of what seemed to work and diced what didn't .. Used a combination of metal and wood for the stock hand laminated pieces of ductile alloy sheet .125 thick and 7ply wood approx .350 thick .. Added two solid alloy pods at the front onto the 3.0 in wide stock .. Your complete hand fits inside the stock where the trigger is housed . Action is a one off 2.0 in dia magnum drop port and conventionally beded(Glued) , barrel is 1.500 tapered profile with a 2.00 dia x .190 wall 6061t6 tube to take up the barrel tension .. All up is 68lbs .. cartridge is my own design based on a 300wm ,30thou shorter, 70 thou longer neck ,35deg shoulder and a std body taper, 92gns of h20 capacity.. Good luck with your new Heavy ..JR..Jeff Rogers

Hi Scott , I won that shirt along with a bunch of other great VORTEX prizes by winning the Australian side of the International postal 1000yd benchrest challenge we have had for 3 years now with sponsorship from your Australian guys .. The 5 different 1000yd Bench ranges that compete over here and can only say Thanks to the support from Vortex .. The pic was one taken by the local News Paper when they did an article on our local shooters taking most of the prizes on offer for 2011 season , i still had a new shirt from the 2010 win .. Lucky i had it on as it is hard to get the Media to acknowledge any Brand names at the best of times . Thanks to Extravision/ Vortex ..JR.. Jeff Rogers

Dogbuster, what do you feed that 6.5x55 and what groups do you get with it? I am a collecter and shooter of old M96 Swedes, considering rebarreling a Savage in that caliber, just wondering if you don't mind. Ron

I have 2 heavy varmint/target rifles I built for long range groundhog shooting back when I was growing up in Ohio.
The blued barrel one is 25-06 that I built back in 1970 when it was still a wildcat. It has a 28 inch McGowan bull barrel, Mark X mauser action and I made the stock. It originally had a 24X Unertl 2 inch target scope on it. The farthest kill on a groundhog was 550 yds with a Sierra 90gr. HPBT.
The stainless barrel one is a 7mm-300WBY. It is on a Rem 700 action and has a Hart 28 inch 1.350 dia. barrel. I also made this stock. I built this back in 1972 when Mary Louise DeVito set the 1000 yrd benchrest record with the same rifle built by Howard Wolf. My dream was to shoot a groundhog at a 1000yds but never got to do any hog hunting with it It also wore a Unertl scope on 36X. They both have Canjar set triggers. A couple yrs ago I sold the Unertls for a good price and put Burris 8x-32x Signature scopes on both rifles. They weigh 25 and 27 lbs. I am currently working up some loads with the Hornady 162gr A Max in the 7mm-300.

The one I used to have. Got tired of packing around a 62 pound gun and all the shitt to make it run that took up over half the back end of my full size Chevy.
