Long-Range Coyote Setups

Long shots. In the field, under less than ideal conditions, I limit my shooting to 300 yards. I can and have shot much further off the bench. With my ass in the dirt and crossed sticks, that is long enough for me. I shot 17 Remington, topped with a 6.5X20 Leupold, and 30 grain Berger's and feel that I am successful with my rig. I hunt the Sheboygan River Marsh north to the Michigan border. My only complaint would finding areas where a longer shot would be possible. The timber wolf invasion has dropped coyote numbers since the eighties.

David Milisock.... when do your shooting classes start... sign me up

That's funny, catching a chuck in the head at 500 yards was a miss. I was taking the body shot. I find it reasonable to tell the truth.

The coyote shooting was me prone on an insulated bag relieving my boredom by taking a long time to range the entire field of fire. Acquiring a target in short time and making mental range estimations was a skill I've worked on since the age of 10, assisted by your donations to the government.

How does that 108 ELD work on varmints? My thoughts are Hornady uses it for their military load in the 6MM ARC, that leads me to believe that's its way too heavy a structure for varmints. The Hornady catalog lists ELD X and ELD match.

The gun is still a virgin, so no feedback on the bullet yet.

Performance out to 1K on milk jugs makes me feel the opposite.

If you can please try and catch a projectile and report what you see. One fragile enough to expand at long range may be awful in close. Of course the opposite goes too, sturdy in close may prove problematic out far.

I ask because I'm building an AR in 6MM ARC and need bullet data. You post didn't say if you're using X or M projectiles.

...and now 6.5 Creedmoor stretching it on out toward 1000.
Do you process the fur? Have seen nothing but softball sized exits with 6.5 on coyotes I smacked with it during deer season. Hand loading now 22-250 with 62 grain hornady soft point bullet (most i can stabilize in 1:14) to minimize pelt damage.
Very hard to find a sub 55grain these days that isn't frangible gopher ammo or require a lot faster twist rate to stabilize even at that same weight (barnes T-TSX wants 1:12 for 50 grain even).

Proper bullet construction for hide hunting is an interesting discussion. Like I said in a previous post Hornady yearscago had a 6MM specifically designed for hide hunting. I can attest the 3 hits with 3 kills, ranging from 350 to 600 yards. Two small 6MM holes and that was my goal, there was a secondary wound channel which was more prominent in the shorter shots, however that did not transmit to the hide.

Yep, you're right Dave, shame politics have taken such a turn for the left the last thing any company needs to tip the Greta's of the world over the edge is the word "FUR"... can see them distancing from it completely; and comparativley its a dieing market in terms of numbers, not many of us left.

True that Mike! Buddy of mine was shooting an AR-10 243/87 V-Max setup and doing well, with small exits being the std. BUT he's now using a new lot of 87's and they're blowing dogs to smithereens.

I have a Nosler NCH in 6mm Creed that I like for a handgun . I love 224 Clark 85.5 Berger at 3535 fps , if its windy 6.5 300 Weatherby with 140 vlds . If had to get factory rifle a 220 SWIFT with Ballistic Tips !!

Are you doing a complete 6 ARC build or just an upper on an existing AR15?

I ask because I'd like to put a 6 ARC upper on one of my AR's, that is if it's even possible.

I'm building with an Aero upper and lower. My understanding is that you can place a 6MM ARC upper on any Mil Spec AR 15 lower. Read up and ask the vendor before you buy.

At that launch speed it will be devastating, i would imagine splitting a yote in half at close range aspecially if you hit him in the shoulder. I have been shooting them for about 2 years now in my SLR and they hit like a hammer
