I did one trip of coyote hunting over 30 years ago, it was a problem on a farm. Three of us, I was sleeping most the time as one drove, then my 2 companions were set up to call and shoot short I was set up to take longer shots, which is why I was invited.Hello everyone I am new here, but have been hunting predators in Texas for 40+ years. I have used pretty much everything from 22lr and shotguns up to 30-06 for predators. During that time my favorite all around caliber was 6mm Remington loaded with 55gr vmax or 60gr Sierra hp's all the way out to 700+ yd's. I also am a big fan of 223, 25-06, and now 6.5 Creedmoor stretching it on out toward 1000.
Be sure to keep us up to date on this 22GT! Id love to hear how it performs.Thought it'd be nice to see what y'all are using to snipe fur with.
I think I'm gonna go with an XP-100 22 GT 17" Krieger 8T pistol I'm having built this year. Probably 80ish grain ELD-M or maybe the 77 TMK. Should be done very soon and then to the range.
Yes sir. The 6mm Remington is a very good varmint/predator/medium sized game round.I did one trip of coyote hunting over 30 years ago, it was a problem on a farm. It was alot of driving, walking, hours of waiting (while calling) and 2 minutes with me shooting 3 shots for 3 kills at various ranges. Longest shot 600, shortest 350. The other fellows got 2 in close before they ran out to what they thought was a safe range.
We picked up the dead, then packed up got to to the farm for grub and more driving, I was told there'd be no more calling them in to that spot for quite some time. I don't know anything about these animals I was brought along for my rifle skills. I was shown a field of fire and instructed to be quiet.
I shot feral dogs on the game farm before, these were more wary but they couldn't avoid their curiosity which got them killed.
700 Remington BDL, in 6MM Remington with an 80 grain FMJ at 3,750 FPS. It was requested that I damage the hides as little as possible. I don't see that bullet in the Hornady lineup anymore.
Yeah Alf--figured you'd steal the show. NICE!!6 PRC, 108 ELD's at 3425:

I never did a coyote hunt again, actually what I did for me was a sniper exercise more than hunting. I knew nothing about the animal I was just a rifleman placed in a spot where they would travel while escaping.Yes sir. The 6mm Remington is a very good varmint/predator/medium sized game round.
I wouldn't hesitate a bit about calling the same spot again. If you got them there once chances are you can again, maybe not as many.
As far as the bullet I never have and never will use a FMJ for any kind of hunting if I can at all help it.
Coyote fishnet stockings... YepI never did a coyote hunt again, actually what I did for me was a sniper exercise more than hunting. I knew nothing about the animal I was just a rifleman placed in a spot where they would travel while escaping.
At breakfast the farmer said he had a problem with them taking stock and that he appreciated the help. It was his son who ask me along. I helped him build a 6MM and was not needed again.
I'm writing from memory here so bear with me. When ask to go on the hunt and told that they'd like the hides I researched a hide bullet and bought the Hornady for a test. Joyce Hornady really talked it up in his writing on the bullet. It was very accurate and it must have been a thin jacket becasue at 300 yards in water jugs it crushed the tip to about caliber size. Interesting design for its day. I can only say its performance was more than satisfactory, I did have some luck with shot placement but 3 shots, 3 kills and 1 at 600 yards, not a bad way to earn breakfast.
Today I'd have to test the traditional varmint and the GMX to see what performed best for preserving the hide and accuracy . The 75 grain VMAX I use for chucks at 3,900 FPS is way to explosive for hide work, unless you're making fishnet stockings.
The 75 grain VMAX at 3,900 FPS will certainly ruin a hide if you catch bone. I caught a chuck in the head at 500 yards. A little hole on one side, hit that bone and took most of the contents of the head out the other side through a hole a bit smaller than a racket ball.Coyote fishnet stockings... Yep
