Load change after brake/suppressor

My brakes impact the groups. I’ve even played around with unscrewing/reindexing them to act as a tuner. It makes a difference.

My MDT Comp brake changed my groups the most. I had to redo those loads when I used it.

Give the 0.001 inch shims they make for suppressors a try under the indexable brakes. You have a mass that you can use as a tuner. Why not give it a try. The results might surprise you. Suppressors and brakes can be sensitive to installation torque too. Your mileage may vary.

The 7 rifles that I shoot suppressed, had load development done prior to installation. In every case, the shot groupings shrank. POI has shifted every time, tho. Usually 1/4 to 1/2 moa.

Yea well that’s a definite maybe. I’ve seen both. They can change tune and POI. Some do some don’t. The only way to know for sure is to check it on paper.
Ah ..change impact probably- effect load tune- no..
Gett’n down to picky details..

Basically yes -1-2oz not gonna see any change

The bullet gases going through the brake will change the POI…
Suppressor weight of 1lb8oz or heavier will change everything- taming the barrel harmonics , changing POI..

Use a magnospeed to develop a load-with it strapped on-!!!
Then take it off.. see if it shoots the same load in a single hole… at any difference-

Do same for a brake- POI only thing change…

I’ve built 500-600 brakes over 20 years and always ask for feedback. The ones that needed re tuning generally didn’t need much. Some benefit from the muzzle weight and shoot better. I’ve had that happen more than a few times. POI can be different story, the worst I ever saw had 6” of vertical and 4” horizontal. It was very consistent. He could take it on and off and it did the same thing every time. That was was early in my career about 20 years ago and was big into experimenting with brakes. He wanted to be able to take it on and off depending on the situation. I ended up building I think 5 brakes that were all different and every one had a similar change in POI. That was a factory M70 barrel that I’m guessing had a lot of internal stress. Like I said the only way to know for sure is out on paper and shoot a few groups..

Anytime you hang or remove, or even move weight on the end of the bbl the tune changes. Look how little you need to move a tuner to change the size of the groups.
in 2008 the IBS did not allow brakes on Heavy guns in 1000 BR. I shot the same 17 lb 300 WBY in both classes Toward the end of the season I analyzed my HG and LG groups and scores. EVERYTHING was better in HG. My HG 10 shot groups were nearly the same size as my LG 5 shot groups. The last match at Pella I decided to shoot with no brake in LG. Mid 2 inch followed up by a small 3. More testing confermed these results. Now remember, this was 2008 and groups weren't nearly as small as today. This was by far the best that gun shot.

Now days you can use a brake in both so it doesn't matter.....BUT forget to bring the brake to a weekend match once...like I did, and things go to shat in a big hurry. I am not talking about POI, which can be fixed with a spin of a dial, I am talking a dasher that shot very well turned to crap all weekend.

So..yes...re tune with or without a brake/ tuner/suppressor.
