Life lesson learned the hard w

My son lives on the west side of Phoenix in a nice area. He graduated from college a couple years ago and got a job with Banner Medical doing autopsys and some pathology work. He recently joined a skeet and trap club out at Ben Avery and had bought two nice Beretta over and unders, basic 686s. Instead of taking them into his house last night he left them in the truck and they were stolen last night. The truck was still locked, no windows broken.

The obvious reaction is why in the hell would you leave them in your truck, couldn’t agree more. That being said it’s hard to see a good kid experience someone stealing their property. He worked hard to get through college, scholarships and grants and no debt. Bought a used truck with cash and has a hardcore work ethic. My total contribution to his education was 300.00, it was a matter of pride for him to do it on his own.

I’ll probably order him a new 686 this weekend and help him absorb the loss and sting. When he called he was pretty calm, more disappointed than angry. Time to give the kid a break, he deserves it.

Police report has been filed with serial numbers, well do the obvious and watch backpage and Craigslist, sometimes these things have a way of working out.

My last experience with insurance company auto covers the exterior, home owners covers interior theft. Depending on your deductible it may not be worth the claim. That's here in NY

Sorry to hear about that, there has been a warning on the local channels in Phoenix about theives going through cars in driveways

There is also the increase in premium, calculate all the costs involved and see if it's even worth calling the insurance company

Dang i bet that hurts.
I try not to leave my rifles in the truck. If i have my a hunting rifle in the truck with a thermal and suppressor, ill bring it into my office at work.
Ill carry it in every night at home and carry it back to the truck every morning. Try not to go anywhere with at least a pistol and rifle but so many thieves makes it for a chore to keep it out of their hands.

2 things
thieves wont go to a local pawn shop. Cover at least 100 mi radius.
Consider relocking the truck, friend sold a truck back in high school found the extra key 5 mo later. Used to move that truck a couple parking spots every time he happened across it.
Point being keys to used vehicles can be floating around.

Does he have comprehensive coverage on his truck? If the truck was on his driveway, his homeowners insurance might jump in depending upon the type of coverage he has.

This!! I LOST, me, I did it, LOST my USMA ring and USAA insurance covered it no questions asked, no deductible.

Your son should have no issues with insurance. It was stolen, while locked up (technically), on his property.

I hope they nail those scumbags.

On a Chevy the go under the door handle to pop open the door. If Ford's the usually just punch the door lock straight in with a huge screw driver.. It is hard to notice with out really looking. Big cities are horrible for property crimes.

Thanks for the tips. He’s learning another lesson, he switched from my insurance guy a year ago, who does my personal and business insurance, to save a couple bucks with Geico. My guy, who is with Statefarm, is an avid firearms guy and has a bit more compassion about the situation. Geico treated him pretty harsh. The lesson is the value of relationships. I’ve been with Statefarm for 31 years, my policies are substantial and it may have helped. He will be switching back and including a renters policy along side his auto. It would have covered it.

One of the great things about this forum is the people. I appreciate the messages and sentiments. My son purchased his last 686 from a dealer who had a group buy going over on Long Range hunting, that dealer sent paperwork within 5 minutes of knowing about the theft with serial numbers and dates concerning the purchase. He then offered another 686 at his cost to replace the stolen shotgun. Things like that are noteworthy in today’s world and very much appreciated.

Thanks guys

Last week for the Berger match, another shooter had 2 handguns stolen from his truck. Not at the range, but also in the driveway of where he was staying.

Basic insurance plans have a ceiling on firearms. Anything above that amount requires a rider. LDS
My insurance covers 5,000 dollars worth of firearms. Statefarm requires a rider beyond that, along with an appraisal. It’s a bit tedious but worth it in my eyes. We all know how far 5k will go....

One more reason insurance is a racket.

I would bet I could say what kind of jerk did this. Out where he lives there are little tent citys behind gas stations etc and most are heavily into drugs. How do I know this, my best friend(woman) had her husband take a bus out there, he lives in this sad state of affairs and they survive by stealing from the better areas where people get comfortable and forget to lock up and boom everything just vanishes. I feel for him and I sincerely hope the jerks get arrested.
