Leopold scopes.....

I think that the VX3 Long Range Target model has been discontinued and re-badged as the VX3i. The scopes appear to be the same.
You could be correct. Companies keep changing get so fast it seems impossible to keep up with sometimes. I just know I saw some advertised amd the number isn't in the name but wrote on the box in words. Matt

I have always used leupold scopes on my guns, and have been very happy with their view and dependability. I have the 8.5-25 and the 6.5-20 VX3's on 4 guns. I put the NXS 8-32 Nightforce on my new 6mmBR Prairie dog gun, and it is wonderful. Better eye relief, more power.......... but a lot more expensive. It ought to be great for the price you have to pay.

The 22-250 and 223 prairie dog guns kill them just as dead as the Nightforce equipped gun, and I have no plans to replace those scopes with Nightforce. If I build another expensive gun, I will put on the Nightforce.

Matt, I Purchased my last vxIII 8.5-25x50 30mm LR target for a varmint rifle last spring for $730.00. I feel I definitely got what I paid for and bought it BEcause it was a good deal.

Ok I just checked a few places and the 8x32 NF Benchrest is 1286.00 and the best I saw the Leupold 8.5x25 VX3i was 900.00. I do think Leupold has improved their glass in recent years and so mabie the new ones are much better than my 8.5x25 as far as clear sight picture goes. So where do you guys get them for 700?-- I'd really like to look at one and see how it compares. I wonder what my L 8.5x 25 is worth if new ones are 700. Thanks

I doubt you will find the vx3I for that price. When Leupold was going from the vx3 to the vx3I it was easy to find the VX3 at really good prices. Too good to pass up in my opinion. Again, this is the LR target 30mm model I'm referring to. I bought mine through buds gun shop. Just kept entering bids until it liked what I bid.

Thanks for that info

I am pretty sure that Mike was referring to new scopes and your referring to used.. huge difference there friend!

I haven't bought a new scope for decades, since all the reputable manufacturers will repair or replace a scope for free, no questions asked. And, anyway, I've never received a damaged or defective used scope, but maybe I've been lucky. I do have knack for evaluating sellers and their items.

I don't think that i was referring to "defective or damaged", but ok..

Up till about 20 years ago Leupold was pretty much it. Last Leupold I bought was a VX III 8.5 X 25 LRT. That is exactly how it was labeled. I promptly put it on top of a .338 RUM for long range shooting. Nothing wrong with the glass or reticle That was somewhere around 16-17 years back and it hasn't broken under heavy recoil.

Every scope since then has been Nightforce 12-42 BRs for competition. The 1/8 clicks are nice. The glass is good enough. I use the illuminated Mil-dot with a fine center dot because I hold off for windage and the illumination helps in some light conditions.

At matches I've looked at and shot with pretty much every high dollar scope made and have not been tempted to spend two or three times the money in the least. And most do not have a reticle I like as I don't like target dots or really fine crosshairs.

Keep in mind that scopes produced in relatively small numbers are going to be priced higher, as are those with a flavor of the day popular name.

recently a couple of buddies of mine and my self were at a local retailer that had most common brands, nikon, leupold, vortex, bushnell, redfield, nightforce, and pb a couple others i cant remember. I am sure the sales man was getting anoyed with the 3 of us but hey its his job right ;)... we were looking through a ton of them, had alot of them out on the counter top so we could quick switch between them, we were pb there monkeying around for hour and half or so, i think we pb taught the sales men a thing or two haha, back to point, after screwing around. my one friend was dead set that vortex were the best, how ever my other buddy seemed to opt for a nf, myself i thought leupold held the edge. we must have went round and round a dozen times, im not saying the other stuff was fuzzy to me or any of that i just seemed a crisper image on leupolds... my one friend said it was a little shadowy for him even after adjusting the eye relief .. the nf friend siad colors were way better to him in the nf. it was just very interesting how we all saw through them differently.

That's pretty much the way it is. Everybody's eyes are different. Sometimes that focusing and parallax adjustment can change it some. MATT

Yea for instance I have a Sightron 3 ffp in 6-24 ... a friend has a vortex pst ffp 6-24 ... it's amazing the difference between the two( Sightron def better ;)) haha

So you must feel your Leupold 7x42 is better for you than an NF 12x42 Benchrest or an NF Comp? I remember a thread where I think you commented on this before. Can you share some of the reasons you like the 7x42 with us again? Thanks

I refuse to buy an optic that does not offer repair service. The "replacement" clause in the warranty leaves me wanting. I don't want some manufacturer to simply send me replacement scopes. It can leave to an unending cycle of receiving the same garbage and return freight is almost always on you.
