Havent got to hunt much this year, finally got back home this past week for the holiday, I saw a lot of deer, but let them all walk, too young and need to grow. We have plenty meat so I wasnt dying to shoot a doe either. Left and came to the in laws place, sat in the blind a few hunts, didnt see a single deer... which isnt normal at all.
This morning my alarm went off at 520am. I laid there debating on getting up for a bit. Finally the thought of a cinnamon roll got me up. Ate a cinnamon roll, got dressed, walked outside and said the hell with it Ill sit in a different blind this morning. Grabbed my stuff, loaded up the ranger and went to the blind, put some corn out, parked walked to the blind, got sll situated.. warm and cozy then my propane bottle went out.. still had 45 min until any light so I changed out the propane bottle, which I just happened to bring with me because I had the thought " my wife probably ran the heater everytime she sat in that blind and it was under 80 degrees".. glad I did..
Laid back in the chair warm and cozy, cold wind in my face blowing in through the windows making my nose run... closed my eyes and relaxed for a while.
It started getting light, I couldnt see anything, but could make out I had deer out and about through the new vortex binos I bought my wife. I had left my steiners in the other blind from the day before.
It got a little lighter slowly I could see more and more. Had a hand full of doe's eating corn, a few yearlings. I watched them a while, still too dark to see real good. Morning progressed a little more. I was planning on shooting a doe to give away meat to a friend. Then I caught movement in the tall grassy feild. The grass is 3 ft to weeds 12 ft tall, cant see through it, only spots you can see a ways.. I noticed the deer was walking with his head lower to the ground and looked like a buck walking slow, had that side to side sway to him. I lifted up my binos and instantly freaked out. It was too dark yet to count points. All I could see was big, tall, lots of tines, and he turned his head enough I could see holy crap hes wide. I said to my self, hes a shooter, and sat the binos down to grap my 284 win in an eliseo chassis.
I looked through my sightron scope and said oh my god again... he was just about to walk into a clearing and out of the grassy field. I didnt waste time... I said take it off safety and dont touch that fking trigger till your ready. (Jewell BR, bottom safety). He stepped outta the grass just after I got another 2 or 3 second look at antlers. I said this sob is a mounter, shoulder shot to save the hide.. I lined up the reticle behind the shoulder and touched it off. PAAAAAAAASSSSSSHHHH (thunder beast 30 cal suppressor) listened to that bullet fly through the air all the way in... didnt hear a thwap!... and all the deer ran off. I looked at my phone, 6:57am. I watched the buck run into the grass and disappear as soon as he got close to the taller grass.
I waited and then went back to the house to give him time to lay. Just in case... got my wife and we went to look for him. I walked up to where I thought I shot him, no blood... the oh crap feeling started sinking in... i walked around, no blood.. my wife said Im just going to start walking... so she took off and I just started walking to where I last saw him. 30 seconds later my wife said theres your deer. In front of me 15 yards, I couldnt see it still... I walked up more and my voice went high, omg omg omg, I was shaking... I started freaking out as he was the biggest deer Ive ever shot. Topped my 2016 deer which was a shoulder mounter as well.
My wife started videoing me as I squeaked and squealed in excitement. I grabbed his antlers and started counting points, 14, no 13, no 15, no 14... I couldnt get the same number each time as I was too excited and never counted that many points before.
We took some pictures and loaded him up to go show the family. Then took more pictures at the house. It was a fabulous morning until I ran a red light I never saw and T-boned another truck... in my brand new GMC Duramax.... on my way to the taxidermist... not too bad I guess, needs a new grill and new bumpers/fog lights/sensors.
