Learn about the 6mm family.

I am thinking about my next rifle to be from the 6mm family. Where can I go to read and learn about them.

It will be used mostly for steel and most likely I "may" want to try to get into matches.

Thanks
Edward
Mr. Barrel -

Howdy !

X2 on what Rat Rifle said. And while there are other websites that present useful info on 6mm's, IMHO.... the accurateshooter site is hard to beat ! Cartridge diagrams, load data, factory chamberings, and a favorite of mine..... " wildcats ".

With regards,

www.6mmar.com .........I suggest getting into one that offers high-quality brass with no fireforming or necking down or up. Preferably one that offers off-the-shelf loaded ammo made from quality brass. .......There is a TON of good info here if you know what you are searching for................Happy Shooting...

Regards
Rick

I would ask here, some food for thought. What ranges are available to you at a distance you're regularly willing to drive? What available distances can you shoot at them? Varmint hunting, long shot string PD, short shot string chucks? Competition, what distance? What's your budget?

There's a 6MM to fit most scenarios, I use a juiced 6MM Remington for chucking and crows, 400+ yards. I have another with the chamber cut for heavier projectiles, I can shoot varmints with it out to 1,000 but don’t, it's mainly a deer rifle. These are sub 1/2" shooters in good wind.

I have a 6MM ARC in a 16" Aero Precision AR as a general purpose working rifle and it's a 1/2" shooter.

The 6MM ARC has 52,000 PSI loads for the AR and 62,000+ PSI loading data for bolt rifles. This is a more simple hand loading choice but, it's not the only one.

The cartridge selection in 6MM is vast and it's hard to say that there's a bad choice but some of the modern cartridges have supplanted some of the previously established cartridges with near equal or equal performance in smaller more efficient packages.

The 6MM has benefited significantly from years of bench rest wildcatting.

Thank you all for yoru replies.

My shooting will be mostly steel and target out to 1000 and if I do well, "maybe" get into local match. But again, Maybe.

I was at the range and a fellow shooter a bench over had a 6mm GT and after shooting that it sparked my interest. And after some searching I noticed there are bunch of 6mm out there so that is why I am asking.

I did not know benefits and/or disadvantages of one over the other, especially the barrel life.

I will check out your suggested sites and readings and get me the Rifle magazine. Also @VegasCharlie was kind enough to PM me his thoughts on the 6mm and his willingness to help out.

Thank you all.

With the vast array of 6mm cartridges, I think of it in terms of distance and retained velocity needs, which leads me to powder capacity. Next would be availability of brass, off the shelf or how many steps of forming is needed. These two categories should narrow it down for you to just a few choices.

^^

Deiced what bullet you want to shoot and how fast you want to shoot it then start looking at a case/cartridge that will fill you needs. Then its just a matter if you want to form brass or buy your brass ready to shoot

The current article on 6BR and derivatives is pretty good except that it does not cover the 6BRA. 6BRA is the simplest 6BR wildcat of all - just load a 6BR and fire it and you’ll have 6BRA brass for the next time. Or buy Alpha already as 6BRA. Likewise, 6BR uses standard dies and 6BRA does also if you stick with Alex Wheelers version.

I think most will agree that 6BR family cartridges are all outstanding and so you just have to decide if you you want “stock” (6BR) or “heavily modified” (6 Dasher) for extra zip with less barrel life. I think all of the variants fit somewhere in that range. I myself have a similar steel gun and I went with 6BRA. All 6BR family cartridges are competition worthy.

Are you looking within 6mm BR family or anything with a 6mm bullet? Because 6 Creedmoor could be an option. I prefer 6BR family for ballistic efficiency, but 6 Creedmoor is more available than anything in the 6BR family.

ETA: one fantastic thing about the 6mm is the availability of match grade bullets. That said, these will mostly be in the 60-70gr range for short range benchrest or 100-110gr range for long range. The BR series and wildcats generally get used with the 100+ grain bullets.

You will never reach your full potential without entering competition. Plus, and more importantly, you will miss out on some great friendships and a lot of fun. Just remember, all the dumb embarrassing things you worry about doing at a match, have all been done by those who are now the seasoned veterens. Ask me how I know. I always advise to go to a local match a few times and see what the guys who are consistently in the upper 25 percent are using.

I am a 6mm fanatic. I love most of them. I tend to consider the 6x47 Lapua the point of diminishing returns as far as case capacity, barrel life, precision and on and on. Right now I have both 6BR and 6GT barrels for my TL3. There’s a world of difference in the two, but there’s pros and cons to both.

I guess if I had to pick just one, it would be the 6x47 Lapua, because it’ll pretty well do it all and do it all pretty well.

Enjoy! 6mm is a deep rabbit hole.

Curiosity has me...I do like the 6.5x47 soooooo that has me thinking about the 6x47. What kind of barrel life does one get running it say at 2900 fps and some PRS shooting? I shoot 6mm cartridges, and I like my 6br the best because accuracy and excellent brass. When my last Competition Match barrel is toast I'm done with it. Like Rick Moorehouse said, no more fire forming brass...
